BK2 or BK7

Ok, so I posted this over on BushcraftUSA, but thought I'd toss it out on here, as well.

I'll be receiving a Mora Clipper in a few days and am looking to pair it with something that will handle the larger, more heavy duty work. As I'm staying under $100, I'm quite interested in the BK2 or BK7 to fill this role. I intend to augment with an actual chopper (hatchet/axe/machete, etc) in the future, but would like to have a bigger, heavier blade than the Mora in the meantime. I intend to carry this one on my belt/thigh whenever I go try to get lost in the woods. Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I love my BK7. Although the 2 will certainly take anything you give it and beg for more (she's masochistic like that), I wanted more blade length and a fourth of an inch of steel seemed like overkill. The BK7 is really slicy like a thinner blade, but it's got enough weight to it to chop alongside its big brothers, the 9 and the 4. It has much more power than many other blades its size.

My vote is for the 7.

Scrapyard Sycko 511.

As for the Bk2 vs 7, I found the BK7 to be an awkward size for me. Just too big to handle the smaller tasks and just too small to be a really good chopper. I prefer knives the size of the BK2, although it's a little fat.

The BK7
The 7 is just as tough, it can baton and chop bigger stuff and it feels more agile and significantly quicker in the hand.

You should post this in the BK&T sub forum, they are very knowledgeable about all of the Becker knives and will probably offer better information.

Another vote for the 7 for a couple of reasons. First, the 2 is a beast and while it will handle anything you can throw at it, if you are planning on carrying it on your person for any length of time, you'll realise just how heavy it is and probably wish you had something lighter. The 7 gives you that, with extra blade length, good chopping power but the versatility to do small jobs well. The 7 is a great all-purpose camp/bushcraft knife and what you are looking for here. Head on over to the Becker sub-forum for plenty of threads on both knives.

BK 2 All the way. It is an excellent choice for the heavy batoning. It is still long enough to baton 6" logs. Just start on the side of the log and work your way around it. This chipping away method lets you process bigger logs with a smaller knife. Most people want to go staight across the center with the first split which requires a knife that is longer than the log is wide. YMMV

After reading and researching obsessively, I just pulled the trigger on the BK7. I wanted something that I could carry on my belt/thigh and the 9 was just too much. So, it should be here by Saturday, just in time for the weather to stop pretending to be Hades and allow me to get out and have a little fun with it. Now I just need some help as far as the sheath is concerned. What kind of mods or ideas for pimping this thing out do you guys have? Thanks!

Good choice.

Talk to BaldingEagle here on the forums. He hooked me up with some really nice leather and brass pants for the 7, and is doing a passaround for a 2 sheath right now. Reviews of his product can be seen here and here (he says he's a novice leather-bender, but nobody believes him).
