I posted this same thread over in the Ka-Bar Forum. I'd like your honest opinions Beckerheads...

I'll be recieving a short Ka-bar and a BK11 in the mail today. Super excited! My next knife will definately be either the full size USMC or the Becker BK2. I was wondering if you guys could list some pros and cons for each knife. I'm new to BF but there sure seems to be alot of knowledge floating around here. I'd appreciate any help on this.

By the way, I've had my BK11 for a couple of weeks now and I absolutely cant put it down!!

It really depends on the intended use for the knife. The BK2 is .25 inch thick so its a beast. Great for heavy use. It is also full tang. The usmc is a nice knife but will not stand up to any where near the abuse a BK2 will. Both have different cool factors. Both are also similar in price range. There is something special about a BK2 though. So what are you looking to do with it mainly?

Jonn,, are you looking for a camp/ trail/ survival knife or a fighting knife. While you could use your bk2 for fighting it's a better survival/ woods knife. And the USMC could and has done field work it's a better fighter in my opinion.

The bk2 is becoming one f my favorite of the bk line. Only the five tops it or me.and that's because I ave heavy field knives already and wanted a camp, kitchen type knife.

Goid luck

I'm mostly into camping, hiking, spending time outdoors. I finally got to handle a BK2 at the local gun show last week. Wow!! What a helluva piece of steel.

Well...It looks like I answered my own question.

You'll do good with a bk2. For fighting? Don't explain that purpose to a police officer. Of course, if are in that type of situation, there's no time to deploy a knife. Fists and what ever you can reach, stick, brick, rock?

Well, not to confuse you too much, but if you're going to compare the USMC to the BK-2, you should consider the BK-7 as well. It is Ethan's redesign of the USMC, same length (7") thickness (3/16") of the same steel/heat treatment, but with a stronger, full tang handle, pointier tip, and most importantly, higher flat grind to make it a better slicer. The BK-2 is Ethan's redesign of the British MOD 4, more of a sharpened pry bar, but again with a higher flat ground blade (with better steel/heat treatment) to be a better chopper and slicer. Of course, if you really want a chopper, the BK-9 is better than either the 2 or 7. Or maybe you'll end up like most of us, with one (or more) of each model. Wherever you start your collection, enjoy!

I agree with the recommendation of the BK7.

If you are going to even consider a knife as long as the regular USMC KABAR, then the BK7 is the ideal combination of the very best of both the USMC and the BK2 models. It's got the handle ergos and full tang strength of the BK2 with the reach and balance of the USMC.

The BK7s overall weight is right in between the other two knives at 13 ounces. I've got em all and so far, I think its the best all around knife of the big Beckers. But everyone should own at least one full size USMC knife for their collection-it's a piece of US Cutlery history and a true classic.
