Hey Guys,
I will be buying a BK2 shortly, and I was wondering whether to strip and patina the blade or not. Advantages, disadvantages? I love the look of a sweet patina. I would probably leave the factory coating on the tang for less maintainence.
Whay do you guys think?
Thanks in advance!!:)

Less friction without the coating. But better corrosion protection with it. Are you a batoner? There's a difference in friction when batoning. Plus taking the coating off allows you to do a full convex, then it really gets work done.

If you are gonna strip it, what do you plan on using to do so? What do you plan on doing to retain the epoxy under the scales?

The reason I ask is there have been many failed attempts at taping off the scales pattern with painter tape. and using a paint stripper which eats everything. A guy that goes by Oregon showed a way to do it by taping underneath and then attaching the scales before applying stripper, and it worked. Personally I just take it all off and put a few light coats of poly under there. Same results, no corrosion. Btw stop on by the Becker knife and tool subforum, lots of great how tos.

Btw DO NOT USE DUCT TAPE!

Thanks clich! Good advice about the tang!
As far as stipping it, I was going to use a gel type stripper so I could control where it was applied.

Just did several searches and could not find that forum, any help?

IMO, unless you live in very wet conditions, maintaining a bare blade requires minimal work. I live in Missouri where 100% humidity is not unusual, and other than wiping my blades down with a Tuf-Cloth, I don't do much of anything to my blades, and have had zero issues with corrosion or rust. Also, I prefer bare steel to coated blades for aesthetic reasons, so I say strip em!

Do whatever you think you'd prefer. Half the fun is customizing the blade to your liking. The more you like it, the more you'll use it.

P.S. try the FAQ/modifications sticky here in the Becker forum. Should be some useful info in there. As far as the gel stripper goes, give it a shot. The type I used was just a liquid, but I was stripping the whole thing, so placement didn't matter.
