BK2 pommel firesteel fail

I took the file on my Leatherman to one corner of the 2's pommel to use that area for scraping on my firesteel. Took the coating off easily, had bare metal to scrape, scraped... No sparks. What gives?

Was the corner on your pommel sharp enough? I know I have to have a decently sharp angle to get mine to work.

The corner may not be sharp enough. Also possible that the metal isn't hardened enough there either.

Ahhh, ok. That must be it. I guess the 2 will being through life with a useless partially-naked pommel. Haha thanks, guys.

Yeah, you really have to square it up to make it sharp enough to cut sparks out of a firesteel. It's not the hardest thing in the world to do, but it does take a bit of work. I like my spines on my knives sharp enough to shave with, which works well for ye olde firesteels.

Hmmmm, my bk2 is stripped but has the factory
angle on the spine and it throws enough sparks
to weld on a trailer hitch. Maybe try a different firesteel?

I'll take some pictures of it tomorrow. The firesteels are brand new from firesteel.com, one 1/2"x4" and one 3/8"x4". I've gotten them both to spark easily using other tools, but I'd really like the 2 to be part of that club. How do you guys square the spine?

When squaring a spine I'll start with a file and then finish with a sharpening stone. You want it sharp enough to be able to scratch your thumbnail.

On my 9 I just ground out a little more of the little choil near the ricasso with a small dremel grinding bit slightly larger in diameter than my steel - doesn't even look like I modified it, but it throws great sparks from a cheap firesteel. I'll post some pics once I figure out how. Took more time to find and chuck the bit than it did to do the mod, and it seems easy to control - and the edge is facing down when using it this way' which seems a liitle safer to me. I like to be safe when I'm playing with fire and knives;)

Have to say, I like granitestateofmind's method the most. Might have to try that next time I'm back at my parents' house, where Pop's got a Dremel.

This is the dull, non-spark-producing pommel.

OK, now I have to post some pics. One of the reasons I just opened up the choil is that my BK2 is a Camillus model without the square pommel. I also think I'm gonna do some checkering on my 9's pommel for better "grip" while hammering - kinda like a framing hammer.
