BK2 - Removing the coating

After using the BK2 in the yard today, I decide to remove the coating on the primary bevel. Using a 200 grit water stone was time consuming, but I don't have any stripper or a sander. I didn't want to remove all of the coating, because I like the look of the laser etching.

The homebrew (a very hoppy amber @ 6.4%) helped pass the time, but now I'm trying to decide between a mirror finish or a forced patina. Without a sander, I think a patina will be the way to go.

coming along nicely, I've had a temptation to do that to a few of my knives ever since I saw that Virtuovice video

mirror will certainly help keep it easy to clean, rust free and slicey. I would go mirror it looks like your already close. that homebrew looks tasty, just had a autumn brown myself while making some venison chili.

Venison chili with a brown ale sounds perfect. I'm doing a broiled sirloin with yams tonight.

As for the mirror finish - I've never done it before, so it might take a while to get it right on water stones, assuming it's possible at all. I have a 1000/3000 stone, so I might give it a shot.

I started doing that with my BK2 and the coating kind of clogged up my 1000 grit waterstone. I'm thinking of using a coarser stone.

Nice work man! Sort of how I did mine (inspired by Virtuovice as well, convex and all), at least, in the beginning. As time went by, it got more of a patina from lemons and apples and potatoes and stuff, and then finally, most of the paint was worn away by wood.
First pic was what it looked like until a few days ago, second is it cleaned up.

Well used finish-

Safe queening it for a few hours...

Still nice and worn, just a bit more elegantly so.

I liked Virtuovices BK2 so much I bought it from him lol. It's been sitting in my safe since I bought it over a year ago. I guess I could pull it out and take some pictures if you guys would like but his videos cover it pretty dang good. Great guy and I hope to buy from him again. These are the only pictures I have taken of it so far shortly after I bought it. My flash made it look all scratched up but it doesn't look like that in person. I had received my first ZT0350 around that same time so it snuck it's way into the first couple pictures. :)

That virtuovice guy has inspired many to do some neat things with their knives. I like his videos and the easy going tone. Kind of like watching the old Bob Ross painting shows. It put me in a happy place with happy trees.....and happy blades. Now if I could only sharpen a knive like that dude. Bob Ross made painting look so easy and I still ended up with stick figure snowball fights for art projects.

That ZT looks like it might be difficult to sharpen with water stones, but I know people like them quite a bit.

Agreed - I only purchased water stones because I loved the way he sharpened...I'm nowhere near as good.

That ZT was my first recurve blade and it will be my last. At least my last edc knife with a recurve but I might buy a safe queen with it. Just to hard to sharpen compared to my other knives. I pretty much just have to use the edges of my sharp maker. If I let it go to far then even that takes forever and then I just take advantage of Kershaws free sharpening service as they are only a few hours from me.
