BK2 scales

I am not a big fan of the grivory handles on my BK2. Are the micarta scales offered by Kabar the best option? Or are there better options hidden out there. I don't have the skill or tools to make my own.

They are a great option if you are looking to buy a set, as they are made for the Kabar BKT's, and fit near perfect out of the box. The do over size them a little, I think, so you can sand them down and make them smooth if you wish.

As for other options out there, yeah, there are some, like Oregon Fal'er, he makes customs, and there are some places like Chestnut Ridge that offer slab scales that fit.

Good luck in your choices, and welcome to the Becker forum, gald you posted up with us.

Yes. 400 grit sandpaper and some oil will make the Kabar stuff butter in your hands

I'll second that. The Kabar micarta is a nice upgrade and really give the knife an even better feel, imo. I've purchased mine from Tomars Kabars and would reccommend them to anyone. One pair came a little bit rougher around the edges than the other, but I haven't found the need to sand the edges smooth yet.

I don't have any experience with Chestnut Ridge micarta or any of the custom makers but I'm sure someone else can chime in. Wood scales aren't really my thing for Beckers (not yet at least) but some guys here make beautiful scales using a number of different woods.

If you do want to develop the skill to make your own, it's really not that hard. A basic saw, file, small belt sander, and a hand drill will do you in a pinch, and you can get most of that for probably less than 40 bucks. Between some of the handle modification pics that are up, you should have the next best thing to a step by step tutorial.

Awesome. Thanks for the ideas and direction.

I might try and make some for the bk11 first. Might be easier since drilling the holes might be easier since I don't have to line them up with factory holes. I have every thing mentioned minus the belt sander.

Goin to search for Chestnut Ridge now.

If you are making them for an 11 you can probably get away without using a belt sander, It will just take more time with the files and sand paper. If you decide to give it a try take some pictures and share. Good luck in your searches!

From what I understand, the Chestnut Ridge scales are only available as a part of the customized BK2 they sell. Also, they are flat like ESEE handles and not contoured like the grivory - you may or may not like that. I personally like the contours.

Do a search on that popular auction site and you will find a couple venders that make custom scales.
I've been tempted to pull the trigger on some of the glow in the dark scales myself.

Don't forget a respirator, working with micarta can be nasty!
