BK2 sharpening - how far do you go?

Hi,

Bran spanking new to the forum but I do have a couple knives and other assorted survival type tools. What I wanted to discuss is my Becker BK2 and putting a convex edge on it. I like the idea primarily for it's edge retention and ease of sharpening in the field. However, stripping the coating and making the edge looks like a lot of work. My question for those who have done it, is it worth it? Geez, I hope this isn't too Bozo of a question for my first post! :)

I convexed the whole thing, but the shoulder between primary and flat is knocked off more for aesthetic reasons than anything else. I love convex edges, I just find their sharpness in relation to the edge retention gives a great ratio.

Mine shaves arm hair cleanly, and it's good that way. I wouldn't want my knife to be duller when I head out.

Convexing is more than worth it. You'll notice an immediate increase to chopping power.

Absolutely correct. After I convexed my BK2, it took nearly half as long to get the same chopping job done. I was completely blown away. I had heard there was a difference, but I was still surprised at how good it was. I also like how easy it is to sharpen in the field.

Welcome! Stay a while.
Convexing is more than worth it. You'll notice an immediate increase to chopping power. DerekH make a thread on how to http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...tory-edge-to-convex-with-the-BK2-(and-others).
Here's me stripping and convexing http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/864866-Where-my-7-s-at?highlight=convexing+bk2.

Pretty painless process all together.

Very very cool! Thanks for that! That made your 7 look like... well I want one! :) Ummm, don't know what to think about the convexing link though. Seems too easy! I mean it seems kind of sad that a simple ladies finger nail file will do that to such a badass knife if you know what I mean!

maethor! Sweet! Can I ask how you did that? belt sander? And did you make that handle?

There's a BeckerHead around here who'll do it for you for a very reasonable price if your not into doing it yourself. Get ahold of ImagineFJ

I go for SHARP when I'm at home, but that changes along the way......

I remember when there was a competition for the sharpest BK2 in the world....

But when I'm out in the bush I use it and have fun.....

^^I'd go with Richard, he convexed my BK3 and now i could shave hair all freakin day with that beast. It was totally worth the wait. I will get pics up if you'd like when my camera decides to work again....

We have members here, like richardj, who's business is sharpening knives.

Gold members are allowed to sell stuff, but you should be looking at the Craftsmen, guys who pay more for their membership, to be listed as such.

I say send it to richardj, I have never heard anything but great things about him. Plus, he's orange.
