BK2 Sheath Dulling

Does anyone have a problem with their factory sheath dulling their BK2?

I cant really tell for sure (probably because my knife isnt really sharp yet), but I just kinda have a suspicion. I dont wanna work hard to learn how to sharpen and then wind up inadvertently dulling my knife.

I know this was an issue with the 11/14 for a while, but I dont remember anything about the BK2. If it matters, its probably been sheathed/unsheathed at least 100 times or so.

Edit:

Nevermind. I dont know what I was thinking. I got off my lazy bum and searched around. Got my answer. Sorry for wasting your time.

Best to just get a different sheath for it. Plenty of good makers on the forums here

The sheaths dull the knife. They are made of glass filled nylon, and it does dull them. The newer sheaths have less glass, but will still dull the edge somewhat. You can get a different sheath, or you can keep using that one until it breaks in and stops doing that, or you can take a small triangle file and fix the issue. I personally just let mine do it cause it never dulled it that much, just made it to where it wasn't hair popping sharp and honestly you just need a working edge. Hope that helps. If not, we got some great leather benders around here (Nix, Sagewood, Skystorm) or we got some fantastic Kydex benders too (Godspeed, Azwelke).

Whereabouts in Okrahoma are ya?

Southwest corner at the moment. But I've been moving all over the state for a year or two.

I love Oklahoma, but there are no nice old forests to go camping in out here. Also, its 800 degrees in the shade right now.

I never had any issues with my BK-2 sheath.
Maybe unsheathing techniques differ.
Or perhaps I had a very quick "break in" of the sheath.
Out of all the stock Becker sheaths, the BK-2 is my favorite.
Kind of a moot point now though, since the Beast is sporting some of Thrillbilly's Kydex!

It is my opinion that unless you absolutely need a new sheath because the dulling is effecting the cutting performance, and you have tried to remedy the issue by filing out the inside/multi-drawing the BK2. Going custom is amazing, but the satisfaction from DIY is nice. I also live the by the philosophy that you should save your money and buy more knives!

I am originally from the sand dunes up Northwestern way. Went to college at UCO first year, then OSU the remaining (GO POKES!). One thing I don't miss is the heat. Or the wind. Both of those things can go gently caress themselves.

This is one of the knives I'm considering... However, this sheath complaint is all over the netz. It's a sunk cost. Many simply deal with the issue by modifying the sheath. Have any of you managed to make the issue disappear altogether after moding?

Mine stopped after about six months of solid use. Others have had the problem go away by taking a small triangle file to it. It really isn't the end of the world like a lot of people make it out to be. And once that problem is gone, so many lovely things can be done with the stock BK2 sheath. So many very lovely things.

I really like the sheath on my BK2. I cut off the strap and put a teklok in the rivet holes, then made a kydex "pouch" attached with screws for an altoid can. It hasn't dulled the knife. I make my own kydex and leather sheaths but I don't feel like doing one for the 2. Matter of fact, my last 2 becker sheaths are still housing their respective blades (17 & 5) as the quality of becker sheaths has improved noticeably. The 5 rattles a bit but I think I'm just gonna heat up and cinch the liner.

Yeah, like I said... I don't think its too bad right now. I barely have a working edge on the knife so I don't notice much. Once payday rolls around, I'm gonna pull the trigger on a leather scout sheath from Skystorm. I'll probably also try to break in or maybe file down the stock sheath because its just nice to have options. That is unless anyone has a spare kydex sheath lying around. ;)

Derek, I was up in Enid till about 2 months ago. I never made it up to the dunes, but I have been to the salt plains before. Cool stuff. Intimately familiar with both UCO and OSU as I have lots of family attending/teaching at both schools.

Im somewhat new to the bk series but, i have officially recieved my 2. I am in the process of breaking in the sheath now, and i was kinda of curious so i thought i would look through the forums a bit. Derek, i absolutely am impressed with your sheath, did you do all the nylon work yourself?

Er, the black one is mine, the green one is one The Warrior did. If you are asking about the black one, yes, everything on that was done by myself.

I never really noticed with mine. I caught and released a few recently and ended up letting it go but kept 2 nylon sheaths and 2 leather sheaths. Much to my dismay I didn't notice they're both lefties from the pics and it wasn't pointed out in the description. The Scout I can deal with on my back but I have some work to do on the dangler whenever I figure how to do it without tearing it apart...

ETA: I grew up in the Texas panhandle just north of Amarillo. It's similar to Oklahoma up there. Tornado alley for sure, and hotter than nine hells! We lived in the canyon where the Canadian river cut through. I loved it and miss it. A whole other world from North Carolina.

New sheaths don't dull - so newbies to forum/Becker's need not worry or panic - this was a 2012 thread resurrected!!!
