BK2 Thickness/Weight Question

I have been considering getting a Becker Bk2 because of all the great reviews I have read, and after holding one I must admit it feels amazing in hand. My worries though like many others are that it will be far to fat to do any precise tasks and be useful in food prep and general cooking. I realize the knife isnt exactly made for that but when Im out I carry a hatchet and a spyderco folder in addition to a mid sized fixed blade. (currently a Kraton Mk1).

I guess my question is does the bk2 limit what you can do with mid sized knife? My mk1 cant take the abuse like the bk2 but I typically have the axe for that and I can still do all my food prep with the spyerco and Mk1.

Does anyone have any experience using the bk2 in a 3blade carry system or even just a smaller blade and the bk2?

In response to the BK2 limiting you, I think it both limits and expands in different ways. The BK15 5.5" will give much more finesse and yet is not the chopper the BK2 can be. My BK2 did ok slicing veggies yet it is slow and cumbersome. Perhaps I need to just use it more.

Upfront, I'm new to knives and bush crafting. IMHO, while I respect the strength of my relatively new BK2 I haven't learned to appreciate it for my current and possible future uses. I think it's a great general use 'if you can have just one knife' knife. My plans are to acquire shorter, thinner, lighter camp/bush craft knives than the BK2 ie the Becker tweeners and larger choppers possibly the Potbelly or BK9. My new BK5 is an incredible cabbage,onion, and tomato slicer.

i use my bk2 for most my cutting needs it is thick but when you get used to it you will be able to use it for any thing thats just my experience. ceck the bk&t fourm you will get alot of feed back on all things becker
 
I myself wondered how it would do as far as food prep was concerned. Surprisingly well!
I'm not used to using a thicker knife for food prep, but the BK2 felt very solid in the hand and not at all awkward.
The BK2 is my favorite knife when it comes to the outdoors.
I havn't ever felt limited when using it even for smaller tasks.
I own a few Beckers but the BK2 still seems like the most overall "do all" knife of the bunch.

I have a BK2 and love it. It is a great all around knife. For me, though, it can get unwieldy. It is thick and large and not the best at food prep and stuff like that. I do not own one but I have heard that the BK5 does an excellent job at that plus most of the stuff a BK2 can do. Just my two cents.
 
I just got one yesterday in the mail. I forgot just how heavy it was. I think you will have to get used to using it if you are used to smaller/lighter knives. But it is manageable.

I'm going to go against conventional wisdom here and say that it sounds like your needs would be better served with a BK-16 or 17. It appears you are looking for a blade that fits neatly between your chopper (hatchet) and your folder. Either the 16 or 17 would be a better choice for that. Sure the BK-2 can do food prep but it's unnecessarily large and heavy in that role, particularly when there are better tools available. One of the Becker 'tweeners' would fit your food prep requirement better yet still offer plenty of blade for other outdoor tasks. Plus it's so light and handy you won't mind it hanging from your belt. Having a BK-2 on your belt is like having a brick hanging there. No wait - the brick is lighter.
