Bk2 trumps seal pup elite

I must be honest and say that I did prize my seal pup elite over my bk2 not because it was inherently better but because it was so much lighter and I would most likely have it when I needed it. However I have used the seal elite and the bk2 until they were like butter knives. Nothing strenuous just constant use over an extended period without any touch ups. Now I used a plain whetstone medium and touched finished with a fine stone. In about 15 minutes I had the bk2 back in service ready for whatever. 1 hour later of working on the seal elite and it will cut but I cannot get it shaving sharp. I have given up trying. It is like the elite was made out of ak47 bayonet steel. I still will use the pup but it is not a camping hiking knife anymore. I cannot rely on a knife that won't readily field sharpen in a survival situation. The bk2 moves up on my list despite the weight. I will now carry it because it has proven itself to me. Durable and able to sharpen easily on a whet stone

Yeah - AUS8 is a decent stainless steel, but I wouldn't want it on anything past an EDC folder. When it comes to hard use (chopping, batoning, etc), carbon steel is the way to go. Dollar for dollar, it will tougher, generally better hardened, easier to sharpen, take on a keener edge, etc etc etc. Stainless steel only beats it in corrosion resistance... which really isn't an issue so long as you take care of your knife and don't strip it prior to going saltwater diving

My BK-2 trumped my old Aus-8 SRK in the sharpening department also. I Hr. or more for the SRK ,less than 30 minutes on a BK-2. Sharpmaker, benchstone, diamond rods...doesn't matter. Good 'ole carbon is the way to go in a bush knife.
