BK2 vs. BK10

I am debating between these two knives (BK2 and BK10) and also the Ontario RAT 5. Any suggestions on which I should get? I'm looking for something to take along camping, hiking, fishing, etc. to be a general knife and also something that will serve me well should I get lost in the woods for a few days.

If it's the only knife you have and you're not taking a hatchet or axe, I might suggest something just a little bigger. A 7" knife is a good jack of all trades, master of none size. Better for firewood gathering (chopping, batoning) and shelter building, but small enough to still field dress game or fish if pressed into service.

BK-7 if you can find one. Or a RAT 7.

I was considering that also but I'm wondering if a 7" knife may be a bit too much knife for me. I'm new to this and this will be my first "good" knife.

If you really want a BK-7, at least a Camillus BK-7 (Ethan may be taking the line elsewhere in the future), my advice is to get it now if you can find one. The Ontarios will be around a while, but the Camillus Beckers are not long for this world unless you happen upon old stock or find one on FleaBay.

If size is an issue, then go with the smaller knives. You can still baton wood with a BK-2. There, my advice would be to pick up one from Tom at Chestnut Ridge Knife Shop before he runs out. Not a better guy to do business with. Between the BK-2 and the Ontario-5, I think the Becker is the more robust knife.

You notice I'm pushing the Camillus Beckers? That's because now's the time to get them while you still can.

Just my perference, but I prefer the BK2. I like the blade profile better.
BK 10 or BK-2.... it is a handfull. There are several BK-2s on Ebay at the moment.

Comparison pics stolen from Tom's website. As you can see, the Becker BK-2 (top) has a slightly wider, more robust blade than the RAT 5.

I prefer my BK2 over my BK10. I really like the BK10, but I've had the BK2 a lot longer and have used it a lot more. When reaching for one or the other, I tend to grab the BK2.

I have the bk-10 & I really like it !
It is kind of heavy but you can do what ever you need with it !

The RAT 7 is a fantastic knife. The 6-1/2” 1095 Carbon steel blade is made for abuse. The 12” overall length knife comes with Micarta handle slabs standard (believe me, you want the Micarta scales) and a lined Cordura Sheath with and accessory pocket.

If the RAT 7 is more knife than you need you can go with the RAT 5, 5 inch blade, the overall length is 10-3/4”. The blade is a little more robust than the RAT 7.

I agree with GUYON, if this is going to be your primary knife the RAT 7 is more of an all purpose knife. The best way to explain it is; If you were stranded and had to rely on one knife you would want a knife the size of the RAT 7.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

I bought a Rat-7 about a year ago as a survival knife. The BK-9 is a great chopper for trees and power poles, but I wanted something more along the line of a meat slicer/fighting knife. The Rat-7 is a great knife.

This is probably not "PC" to say, but having owned RAT5, RAT7 (1095 and D2), BK2, BK7, BK10, and more, I still prefer the edge geometry and edge holding of a Fallkniven S1 or A1.
I've used my RAT7, RAT5, and Beckers very hard and they are solid knives, but I can never get the handles to fit my hands very well no matter what I do. (I have large hands and yet the RATs feel like a 2x4 in my hand and even the Beckers feel large.)

My recommendation is to go to a cutlery store or gun/knife show and try them out. See how they feel in your hand, then make your decision.

That said, I just got another BK2 just in case they are discontinued forever and ever...

Regards,
Mike

Thats what makes America great! This would be a dull place if everyone preferred the same knife. There would only be one manufacturer and one knife produced. So throw “PC” out the window. We appreciate your opinion.

I think we can agree that when we are talking about the Fallkniven, Becker, or RAT knives, there’s not a bum in the bunch. However the Fallkniven S1 and A1 knives are not really compairable to the Becker or the RAT knives, but the S1 and A1 are very nice knives in their own category.

Thanks,
Tom

yes, the fallkniven are better (ducks and runs :>) well, honestly, they're ... different knives... but for what they do, mmm, yah, its hard to compare.

if you want REALLY stout, the old campanions were 1/4 inch thick. whoa. not many of those around.

for most purposes, you just can't beat those beckers on price/performance.

A good Camillus comparison to the Fallkniven would be the CQB1. I carry the CQB1 as a personal protection piece. The multi-position Kydex sheath gives the knife a good position on my left side; it makes for easy access in an elevated moment. 154CM and ATS34 were used in the production of the CQB1, my knife is the 154CM.

I have handled the Fallkniven and it is a fine piece.

I have a BK 10 as my heavy duty knife. The 5" blade is a good middle of the road length, and the knife can"act" like a much bigger knife, but is still appropriate for smaller knife tasks. With a BK 10 and a multitool, you can rule the planet!
