BK2 vs BK7 Question

Hey Guys, I have a question about the 7 and the 2 when it comes to filling the role of a light chopper. I have a BK2 already and I'm looking at picking up a 7. I will be using one of them for day hikes and short trips into the woods. Which brings up my question, when I need to do some light chopping how well is the 7 going to out perform the 2? Is it a noticeable enough difference to bring along the bigger knife? Thanks for your time and Merry Christmas to all you Beckerheads.

opinions and techniques will vary for sure, for me though I'd say they are about the same for chopping when you choke down on the ball of the 2 its weight gives it that solid 'thud'.. battoning larger diameter wood however the 7 will excel.. I started using the 2 for some battoning firewood tonight and switched to the 7 as the the 2 came up short..

so in short, unless you plan to do some larger diameter batoning I think the 2 is fine for chopping.. great knife all around.

Both are versatile, high-quality knives.

My favorite choppers in the Becker line are the BK9 and the BK2. The BK2 has a solid weight while chopping, where the extra two inches of blade on the BK9 in relation to the BK7 were a benefit for me; I don't use the BK9 for fine, detail work.

As always, Becker offers a quality product and a thoughtful design. As mentioned before, it will depend on your usual uses and personal preferences.

Merry Christmas! Take care and God bless.

In my hands, I can't find anything that the 7 doesn't do better than the 2. The 2 is pretty beefy/thick, so it doesn't slice as well as the 7. The extra length on the 7 with the slightly less thick stock make it good for snap cuts on branches & vegetation, and it will chop moderately well on general wood. The 2 won't do the former well at all. The 7 has more length for batoning. The 7 is less fatiguing to use for long periods of time.

Again, the above are personal observations about how these blades work for me. The popularity of the 2 clearly demonstrates that my views do not represent the majority.

i'd skip the 7 and go straight to the 9 if i were you, unless there's some factor (military, law, won't fit inside the pack, etc) that rules out the 9's blade length. if i remember correctly, even ethan posted here the only reason the 7 exists is because the 9 is too long for the military's length limit for belt/pack/on-person carry.

I have both and still prefer the 7 for most purposes, by a pretty good margin. But then, unless it's a dayhike, I'm likely to couple mine with a belt axe. The nine is a great chopper obviously, and still a slicer, but it's just not very controllable for me when doing something like making fuzzies.

This ^^

I agree, if you're wanting some light chopping etc skip the 7 (for now) and make the plunge for the 9....

If answering the OP, I would have to side with spooky on this one. While I love the 2, I find myself grabbing the 7 more often these days. I think the 7 does the detail work as easily as the 2(I think both are too big for real detail work), and the extra length makes wood processing easier. The 2 has the indestructable heft, but the 7 is more than enough. As far as weight, they are too close to matter. The 7 does slice better, and the 2 can field strip a buick. Get both!!

get a 9 for chopping and a 5 for slicing. send the 7s to me for disposable :)
