I just bought my BK24 from Am****. I am wondering is the finish usually good. I'm not sure if it's pitting or whatever you call it but there are a few little dark spots that dig into the steel. There are also a bunch of grind marks on spine and handle. It's nice and sharp. Should I return it?

Is this normal? Will those dark pits get worse?

The grind marks are normal. The brown rust stains and pitting are not.

Looks like rust damage to me and I'd return it.

I have to say I wouldn't be happy. It won't affect the blade usage, but it's D2 steel. I wonder if it's been exposed to moisture for a period of time or even high humidity.

So 2 people said I should return and one said stonewash. Would stonewashing cause those little pits. I don't know how something is stonewashed. If little stones are tumbled with the knife, would it make those little holes? I don't think these knives are forged or anything so, I don't understand the little pits.

I just got the knife today. The one brown rust spot I was able to rub off. But the little dark spots are actually like pits. Not exactly gouges or anything but because it's D2 steel, I wonder if it would get worse. For a small knife, there are a lot of little imperfections. I don't really mind the grind or machine marks, it's those little pits.

I was wondering if anybody else's D2 BK24 had the same pitting and stuff.

KaBar stonewashes those

the knife should be smooth and satin like yet "dull"

there should be no pits on a new knife

did you soak it in vinegar or acid or attempt to etch it?

looks like bad stock otherwise

if you don't care, use it

if you care, call them on Monday

No, no soaking or etching. UPS Dropped it off at like 12pm and I opened it up and was not happy. But wasn't sure if it was me or the product. Stewed a little while, thinking it over and decided to ask more informed people about it. Confirmed my unhappiness so I am going to return it.

I don't have a lot of money and I just can't take the hit if I'm not happy with it. If I messed it up, I'd be fine with it. But I can't stand getting something not up to par for my hard earned money.

Upon closer inspection, there were more rust spots that were harder to see because they were hidden by the machine and grind marks.

use HOT HOT HOT water. wash it. use soap and a scrubby. report in.

i have one of the early ones. i have soaked it in all manner of food and generic kitchen wastes, pickle juice, orange juice, wine, whatever. i cook with it. it's still flawless. no rust. it won't patina.

take that as you will
