I have a few Esee knives and from what I understand the 24 is a joint effort between Esee and Becker Knives? My question is when I have stripped my Esee knives and squared the spine I could rarely have success with a firesteel, it was my understanding that the hardness is different on the spine as opposed to the blade. On my Becker knives I can square the spine and get a shower of sparks, so is the 24 a true Becker or is it made with the same specs as an Esee? I want to pick up a 24 and want to be able to use it on a firesteel.

If you're squaring the spine and not getting sparks, then it does sound like a steel issue. The BK14 and 24 are the same knife design in two different steels. The 24 is D2 and the 14 is 1095cv like all the regular Beckers.

I can't comment on the D2. I'm sure someone else here will. But if all else fails, the 14 should do the job for you and is still the joint Becker/ESEE design.

I think the 14 might be the way to go, who is giving the best prices on Beckers these days? I have been out of the loop for awhile. I did check Amazon and will start searching, will get a custom Kydex while I am at it.

I know I plug this place a lot but I just couldn't be happier with my purchases from Coyle Outdoors.

His prices are in the ballpark of "the river" and he includes stainless nuts and bolts. He's great with either phone or email correspondence. And he knows a lot about the Becker line.

This is the custom BK16 (squared spine, parked, and micarta) and rig I got from him yesterday:

All except the 5 are from Coyle:

The BK14/24 design is a collabaration between BK&T and ESEE, mating the blade of the BK11 with the handle of the IZULA.

As already noted, the 14 is 1095CV while the 24 is D2.

My 24 has no trouble throwing sparks but I squared up the spine before trying it.

would you say the D2 throws sparks as well as 1095?

not to doubt your workmanship of squaring the spine, but i would bet that you could still have some of the powder coat build up on the corners of the part that you squared. try knocking that off and give it another go. if you need to confirm that the esee is more than capable, try a few strikes with the blade itself (pains me to say that) it will kill your edge but it will show the capabilities of the knife once you get the spine perfected

I'm going to bet that when you squared the spine on your ESEE, you left the coating on the sides of the blade.
the BK24 has no coating, so it throws sparks off a ferro rod just fine once you've filed a square spot to scrape with.

I stripped the paint off the knife completely, its either the heat treat isn't the same on the spine or it really isn't squared off the way it needs to be yet. Thanks guys!
