BK3 or BK4? Which odd-ball to add to the toolbox?

I've got a lot of my knife needs covered already, and am pretty practical about what I get. I keep looking at the Machax and Tactool and think it's time to add one of them to the toolbox. It'll probably be something that stays in my vehicle and I'm kind of leaning toward the BK-3 as a hammer, prybar, wood splitter type of tool. I currently leave the Ka-Bar Cutlass in the car as it's a great chopper, but I wouldn't want to pry very hard with it.

The current line-up is a BK2, 9, 13, 15, and 16 and I use an ESEE3 and Ka-Bar Cutlass quite a bit, too. If it comes to real heavy chopping, I've got a Kelly double-bit and a Fiskars 28" axe.

Anyway...thoughts. Which should I get and why?

In my car I have a BK3 and in my backpack BK4 ...

Depends on use, but I see that you like cutlery .. I recommend getting both!

For car carry, DEFINITELY do the 3. Mine is riding shotgun currently and it has come in handy numerous times!

How have you used the BK3? Both of these blades hold appeal for me, I'm just not sure how much / for what they'll get used.

I *PERSONALLY* have not used the -3. However I happened upon an accident with my mom and there was an off duty fireman. HE used the 3 to break the window and cut the guy's seat belt off and we dragged him out.

Yeah, for keeping in a car make it the BK3. If you get the BK4 it will become your primary woods knife. :D

Got me a red -3 for the Jeep.
No cop can accuse me of having something "tactical" within reach. It's definitely a tool, not a knife. I was going to letter "RESCUE" on the blade, but it took too much effort to make the stencil. :D

It looks good as is man.

Although the Machax is my favourite knife, bar none, if you're keeping it in the truck, I'd pick the BK-3. In fact, I find myself carrying it more often than the Machax even in the woods, because I can beat the s**7 out of it and I don't worry. Also it's a bit shorter than my Machax and fits in my shoulder bag easier. That will probably change once I find a bit larger bag.

As far as "for what they'll get used", here's my take on it .

Thanks Doc! It was cool to read that post again a year later. I can't believe how far one year can bring someone's skills (and knife / tool collection). When I first read that bushcraft was a new concept to me, beyond just making campfires and outdoor cooking. I never thought of any of those skills as potential survival skills. I remember reading that post and being awed and confused, so I guess you're to blame as one of the guys setting me out on the path of gaining new skills and expanding on my love of the outdoors.
