I posted this in the Becker Forum, but, THE GUYON thought I should post it up here as well.

Ok, time to shine. Our objective was to use a BK3, to extricate someone that has been trapped in a car. The easiest way, through the windows and doors. First we smashed and cleaned the passenger side window. Window busted easy, and we had our first objective done, we are in the car

Then, we began prying on the door, as, you can't drag an injured person through a window, unless necessary. We started up high, using the chisel tipped BK3 to slip the door frame, and gain leverage to pull the door out.

Job done. Now, since the top was pulled free, we could focus our efforts on the lower door, and the dreaded Nader pin. The nader pin, in a normal situation, is just cut with the Jaws of Life. Our simulation, was "first on the scene, and you have a BK3". So, no jaws of life in this scenario. Fireman S, one of my best friends, and I had been trying to figure away for the BK3 to beat the Nader pin. When we started, we still didn't have a solutions. Ta hell with it, sometimes you gotta dance in the shoes you wore, with the lady you brought to the dance.

Ok, first way around the Nader pin, was to just open the door up like a coke can, and reach in and activate the lock mechanism. Problem, the opening we had, wasn't big enough to fit a gloved hand in. Problem solved.

The door swung open, we were in. Trapped personnel could be extricated to a safe area, for the stabilization of the patient to begin.

We ain't done yet. Matter of fact, just getting warmed up.

Next up, we wanted to defeat the Nader pin with the BK3. Time to pry.

Just a half a heart beat after this photo, the lock mechanism gave, and the Nader pin had been defeated. Fireman G, basically managed to get the lock bent in a manner, that he could just lift it off the Nader pin. Nader pin, defeated by the BK3. So far, busted glass, opened the door like a tin of beans, pryed the door open and off the Nader pin, and this is the shape its in.

Up next, we break the BK3. Yes, you heard me, we break it. But, the challenge doesn' end there, I promise.

I saw the original post. You guys had too much fun. It is a great demonstration of what the tool can do and can take. The breaking part proved two things to me. First that I was right when I was trying to choose between this blade and another similar design, in that the notch did make this design more fragile. Secondly that it is not quite as fragile as I expected.

I will say this. The knife broke doing something it shouldn't have been doing. Trying to pry off the Nader Pin was over the top since the door had already been breached. I would like to have seen the guys go after that roof and windshield with a full-length blade, perhaps using the notch as a windshield cutter. Still a durn nice field dressing, wasn't it?

Nice shots!

I owned a few of those vintage Omnis through college and thereafter.
Great engine 2.2L, I believe.
Dependable and outstanding mileage... 40+mpg with the manual.

But damn if you didn't need the tools and techniques shown here to enter the damn things do to the lame ass, cheap door handles they put on them.

Thanks for the great post and knife content!

Looks like Ethan missed his chance. If he'd worked with Dodge, a BK3 could have come standard with every Omni sold. :D

Here's what I find to be the funniest part of all, the guy who donated this car to us, just had a new dash, handles, tail lights, and headlights put in, just before it blew the engine.

its a very cool video and really shows what a BK3 can do but the more and more i look at it i keep thinking someone is going to slip and cut themselves or a crowbar seems infinitely better as a tool for this job

I wanted to show a buddy of mine what the BK3 could do, however due to legal infringement, the video has been removed by YouTube. Do you still have the original? and/or can you strip the audio out that is making it illegal?

I had the use of a Dodge Omni for a summer long ago and this brings back memories. Never dissembled it, though. I used to carry my Tac-Tool in my trunk for such an emergency, but one never came up. I eventually broke it abusing it with the back of a hatchet when splitting logs.
