So I ordered a bk4 last week and now that I have it, my first thought is wow its smaller than it looks in the pictures. I still really like it and I think its a great tool.

So my question is...

Are there 2 different kabar bk4s besides the roll stamped version and the laser etched version.

Im talking about one with a wider (higher) blade and or grind. Or is it like an optical illusion im seeing in some pictures.

Post a pic of yours and the guys on here can better help.

Nope. Just the two versions.
A lot of Machax pics are indeed optical illusions.
They always seem to look bigger in pics than in real life.
I remember thinking it was smaller than I thought it would be.
Since then the Machax has become my "go to" woods tool. I love it!
Congrats on the new steel!
Go beat the hell out of it, learn to post pics, and post some pics. Lol!

Warrior I appreciate the link. Will try to figure all that stuff out.

Jonny1280 thank you for answering my question. Your blade looks much taller in that picture than my 4 looks in hand.

I have used my new 4 to make a fire, chop up some small limbs that came down in a storm, clear my back fence of some encroaching briars and woody vines.

When I got my bk9 last year I stripped it almost immediately, I think I am going to let the 4 wear naturally. So im up to 3 Beckers now 4, 9, and a 15.

Thanks everyone.

This is the same reaction I had when I first handled one; probably the same as a LOT of folks have had. They are all the same length/size, whether Cinci, Camillus or Ka-bar. I finally got one to help out a friend (who was selling it to finance something else) - and finally used it.....NOW I know the brilliance of the design, and even picked up a second one to have as stock, since I ground a bit of steel off my first one ;). While it doesn't look in hand like you thought it would from the pictures, it's still one of my favorite woods tools, and a regular carry knife when I'm in the woods.

Maybe check the blade database stickied near the top of the Becker subforum. The Ka-Bars should all be the same but the older versions before Ka-Bar were thicker.

Alright - let's clue him in, there are two iterations.

There's the one(s) you see in pics without reference to scale and then there are thew ones that they sell. Because of our preconceived notions on what we think the Machax should look like and what size it should be, we see the big one. Then, we go and buy one and get the one than Ethan designed - which is every bit the capable chopper that we thought it would be (and then some) as well as the knife and all-around outdoor implement Ethan wanted it to be. So, in sum, we see what we think it should be in pictures that do not have a size or scale reference and then we wind up getting the product of Ethan's experience, expertise and exercise in the discipline - thankfully!:thumbup:
