Did you neutralize the vinegaroon w/ a baking soda solution? That is one of the recommended treatments of vinegarooned leather.
"Vinegaroon" is an "iron left in vinegar for a couple of weeks" solution that chemically changes the color of the leather. Vinegaroon solutions do not dye the leather but cause a chemical reaction in which the leather turns black all the way through when you soak it in the solution. Get a scratch in the leather and no tan shows in the scratch.
It's also recommended that vinegarooned leather be treated with neatsfoot oil after neutralizing the acid solution as the acids will cause the leather to dry and crack sooner.
i didnt use a neutralizer only because i didnt soak it, i just brushed it on with a paint brush..and i used some mink oil instead the same stuff i use on my boots.
i used rusty razor blades and a rusty pair of wire cutters let them soak in peroxide for a couple hours..then dropped them in vinegar for 2 days.
