BK5 as a fillet knife?

Has anyone ever tried this? I imagine it wouldn't work that great on anything smaller than a bass or small steelhead, but I'm thinking about getting this as my next Becker knife and the thought popped into my head.

I don't need a fillet knife (I use my Rapalas), I was just wondering how it would work in a pinch. :)

I have never tried, but now that I think about it, it would probably work wonderfully!!

I would tend to agree that the 5 wouldn't be good for anything smaller, but on a larger fish it seems like it'd work well. The only thing is that it's not flexible like a traditional filet knife.

I have thought of using the BK15 (mini-magnum) when it's released for fishing purposes, though.

There was a thread where someone filleted some trout (or maybe it was pike) with a 5.
If you need a fillet knife, take a look at the long and short versions by Ka-Bar.
Great ergos and made in the USA.

I have used a 18" Ontario machete to fillet catfish before and it worked alright. I am sure the BK5 could fillet a catfish rather easily. Next time I go set some limb lines I will try it out.

The 5 does do well as a fillet knife, but the size does tend to make a little awkward for finer detail work. For large catfish, pike, walleye, etc, it is excellent. It's also good for alligator!

I like a longer, flexible blade for filleting. The 5 is more of a carving / butchering knife. The problem with it for boning / fileting work is too rigid and too thick.

Of course it could be used if need be - just not the ideal tool for the job.

mini magnum camp coming soon

course, the split and rip the head technique works great. leave the bones in :)
