BK5; camp kitchen knife?

BK5: I remember picking up a stainless version (EK) years ago at a knife and gun show; much sturdier. This is supposed to be 18.8 thick. No way. This is nothing more than a camp kitchen knife.

WHY IS KABAR AVOIDING USING 1/4 INCH STEEL??? Sorry, but in a blade for woodland use, I want 1/4 inch steel. Maybe that's why your CAMPANION is so loved; because it is SOLID, which inspires confidence.

This was one (BK5) that I've wanted for years, and it made me sad. i'm "very" poor, and the discontinuation of this knife allowed me to purchase this knife for under $60 from "Ka-Bar" on Amazon.

My question why have you posted four threads about this?

Stop whining city slicker and try using the blade the bk 5 is more capable of camp tasks then many other knives thicker than the bk 5

I've got one and I like it. Really is a camp knife, useful for all the various camp chores. Even got a leather sheath for it.

I thought I had only posted it twice. I have no idea why it came up twice on both forums.

Soooooooooo, "City Slicker"? It's obvious you're a kid that just glommed on to the maker of your first "real" knife. Hey, that's cool; however, don't try to bust my nuts for a non-offensive, legitimate "whine".

I still like the knife! It's just not as beefy as the first one I held 20 years ago. Ya' know what I mean?

hate to break the news to you, but your memory is faulty - while there was a 440C version of the Blackjack/EK/BK&T Magnum Camp knife, it was 3/16" thick, just like the currrent manufacture - not 1/4".

Spend a winter in northern MN cabin for a week, THEN tell me I'm a "City Slicker"...kid...or stupid adult.:playful:

nope - that's how they were designed from the git-go.
3/16" stock, full length unsharpened swedge, distal taper.
they were designed for maximum efficiency when cutting soft materials, like meat - but with enough strength to handle camp and woods chores.
and yes, I heard that from the man who designed the blade in collaboration with Mr Becker.
I used one to cut a frozen golf ball in half once -- despite the thin grinds, there was no rolling or chipping of the edge.

It was listed as "18.8" where I bought it from. AS I'VE SAID, "I LIKE THE KNIFE. I JUST EXPECTED IT TO BE STURDIER."

Not 18.8 but .188 which is 3/16".

This is nothing more than a camp kitchen knife.
It performs all 'camp' tasks well including chopping. As has been documented in several posts here.

Hence it earned the name Magnum Camp Knife.

it's light and has a balance point very near the handle - don't mistake that with weakness.
it's plenty sturdy.
I totally understand looking at it and thinking "that's a big knife - it should feel heavier in hand"
I also totally understand preferring a heavier knife with a more point-forward balance point.
will the BK 5 chop as well as a 9? no
will it baton and wedge through wood like a Campanion? no
would I use one to pry up rocks? no

if it was the only cutting implement with me in the woods, would I feel underknifed? yes.
but I'd feel the same way in any situation where I only had 1 knife and no saw or axe.

if you like it, use it - give it a chance, it may grow on you.
if you want something different, go for it -- there's plenty of cutlery out there to meet anyone's tastes.

I am sincerely sorry, everybody. I never meant for my original post to offend; obviously I faulted on my wording. Further on...eh, I let my temper get the best of me.

Apologies,
J.Davey
