I've been mesmerized by all the fun that was had at the outing with the BK5.

Issue at hand: I'm constantly sharpening my kitchen knives because they are junk (weren't exactly cheap, but junk) and my wife somehow nicks the living crap out of them all the time. So here is my idea, good or bad, I'll let you decide.

Purchase some Becker BK5 goodness
have a strip tease in my garage with the BK5 being the star of the show
polish till nice and shiny on all surfaces
add some permanent black linen micarta or ironwood scales
full convex the edge, and put the BK5 in the drawer for a lifetime KP.

OR would I just be better off buying a good quality stainless knife and adding the BK5 to my pack?

Get two bk5s. One for the pack, one for the kitchen. Leave the one in the kitchen black and as is, the sucker slices well enough out of the box and then there is less worry about corrosion/patinas/scuffs of your nice polish.

If you strip it for KP duty, leave the paint on under the handle, as it will get detergent washes (or at least is should :D) quite regular. Mine does just about daily. Detergent water, sealed up against carbon steel under some handles = thick flaky rust. Been there, done that.

I would also recommend sticking to grivory, or some other non porous material, like G10 or lexan. I cut alot of raws with mine, along with other stuff too, and it can get quite funky, even with regular washings. I had micarta on mine, went back to the grivory, post haste. Don't worry about your hand slipping on the grivory, its gets quite grippy when wet or slimy. Trust me.

So, rig one up for the kitchen, pimp it out, make some meals, take pics along the way, and post them.
Then, get you another one, pimp it with some micarta, beat the finish til it looks like hell, then strip it. Take pics along the journey, and post them up.

Simple solution for an otherwise impossible problem. Damn I'm good.

BK5 is at home almost anywhere. I like the black coating & all its wonderful battlescars, but thats just me. Once you get one/two, you will wonder why you waited so long.

one could fill the grivory with silicone caulking and let dry... boo yah

one could also simply repaint the under handle area with something like a clear coat, or even tool grip ;) put the filled handles over THAT... should be sealed and good to go :)

for ESP wondrous sealing, melt wax into the bolt holes :)

i'd probably then just cut a lot of meat for the stew pot, some pineapple, and papaya, and such, and let the blade get a natural kitchen patina. done.

I would add stainless hardware also:)

How thick is the blade on the bk5 compared to a standard kitchen knife? I think that a $70 chef's knife would be better suited for the kitchen than the bk5. If it was me (I hope I don't get banned for saying this), I'd pass up on getting the BK5 for my kitchen. I'd get a chef's knife, and tell my wife she can't use it. She can keep using the older knives.

In reality I do have a kitchen knife that I'm the only one to use it. It's the one I like the best but my wife likes a different one better.

You could do all those things to a BK5 OR you could have a striptease in your garage with your w........, does anyone not know where I'm going with this?

Thanks for the responses, I can't believe Oregon was the only one to make a comment on the strip tease... disappointed, yep disappointed. :)

I must have been in a bit of a hurry when I typed "micarta", because I was thinking G10, thanks Moose. I'm still at odds for what to do, so an order for 1-BK5 will be placed today and after a little chop/chop on the cutting board I will decide on the next step.

Thanks everyone... pics will be heading in...

strip it to look sorta like this, But don't give it a mirror polish cause it won't last.

Then put some Micarta on it or just leave it with the grivory. convex would be good. don't put wood on it, or have wood but keep it off of the knife until your taking pictures and or going to the woods.

I don't see anything wrong with what you said. I feel the same way. I have a set that my wife isn't suppose to use. Does she??? Maybe some times, but when she cuts herself I just tell her she shouldn't have been using my knife :D

I say buy a good chefs knife and the BK5. You'll be happy with both of them.

This is the one that I have

Thanks for the responses everyone. I just got done ordering one BK5, just happens to be my 5th Becker! I ordered a BK2 for my neighbor who eyes my BK2 every time we camp with the kids.

Thanks again.
