Bk5 Vs BK9

Need your opinions. I owned a BK2 & BK7 I didn't like the thick blade of the BK2 and didn't like the point design on the BK7. I ended up getting a camilus BK2 which is a little thinner which I like a lot. I also have the BK16 which I really like.

I am trying to decide between the BK5 and BK9 to try out next. I never had a "big chopping" knife like the bk9 so I don't know if I would like it. The BK5 looks neat. It looks like it would be a pretty good all around knife except chopping. I guess what I am asking is if you own both what are your thoughts.

Really it depends on the application. If it is just a matter of suggestion towards which one to get next though, that is different.

Personally, the 5 is a heck of a knife. It is light, quick, and gets frighteningly sharp in ways I don't think many of the Beckers can. Might just be a mental thing, I assume they should all be able to get to the same sharpness, but something about the shape and profile of the 5 makes it just seem sharper. It's only area of weakness is it does feel thinner, and the weight is pretty low.

The BK9 though, that thing is a brute force chopping powerhouse, without a ton of extra weight. Compared to the 5 it weighs more, but compared to a brick it is light in the hand. It has a little more reach, and a shape more conducive to various field chores of a blunt nature, but it can get pretty fricking sharp, as illustrated by Moose chopping through not one but two layers of thick rope that was free hanging.

Either way, there are pros and cons to either decision, but if this is a mere pit stop on the way to both, I say get whichever one tickles your fancy more, you won't be disappointed.

If you dont like the point of the BK7 grind it off...Makes a sweet mini BK9 ;). Get which ever one appeals to you more.

5. Get a 5 it is an amazing piece of steel. I have it and it is great, and if you don't think it can chop you are wrong. Will it chop AS GOOD as a 9? No obviously, however it will still take some nice deep bites in some wood and other media

Dude. You need a 5. It's an epic blade.

Oh, and the 5 WILL chop. not as well as the 9, but it bites deep and chops with speed instead of weight. 5's are awesome.

It sounds to me like you want a Ritter Mk2 "BK12." It's basically an anorexic BK2 with a thumb ramp.

Well.... both are thinner than the BK2. The BK9 by some, the BK5 by more.

The BK9 is not as pointy as the BK7, similar to the BK2, but not exactly.

If I could only keep one of the two, I'd choose the BK9.... if I could only keep one knife (period), I'd choose the BK5.

Like others said, it really depends on what tasks you want the blade to *excel* at. I say excel because they can both perform almost identical tasks, but each one is going to be better at certain ones.

If you can answer that question for yourself, then for us, we can give a more definite recommendation. Otherwise, you won't hear me say anything bad about either blade.

I don't have one myself, but this seems to be the perfect solution to your dislikes on the BK2 & BK7

If you're looking for a chopper though, the BK5 or BK9 will be better. The BK12 would chop about as well as the BK7, maybe not quite as well.

Thanks guys, well I think I will get both eventually then. I guess the only way to find out is try em out.

Bk5. its the best there is, AND it can chop. not as well as a 9 but you don't have to sacrifice it being the lightest fastest most nimble knife on the big Beckers. the Bk5 is an inch longer but weighs less than a bk7. it gets sharper than a light saber, and feels bigger AND smaller in hand than it really is.

Its my favorite for a reason.

If you are looking for a chopper you need an RBK! Once you get the 5 and 9 you'll realize you do want the 12, then the 6, then you'll realize you need the tweener so you'll get the 16, realize you need the 15 to go with the 5, then the 17 cause it is just sexy, then you'll realize you need the baby blades so you'll get the 14, but you'll want the bottle opener so get an 11 also, and by that time the 18-24 will be released so you'll buy them too...

This.

I have both, both are Camillus versions. My 9 is the double edged Hog Hunter.

They both chop but it's a different kind of chop.

The 5 chops like a smallish machete.

The 9 chops like a smallish hatchet.

The 5 has more slice.

The 9 has more percussion.

I've had my BK-5 so long and used it for so much, it has bonded to my soul.

I love my 9, it's been around long enough to take a hair Popping edge! It's my go to and always amazes me at it capabilities. I have others and will have others , they all fill a niche, but my 9 makes me comfortable in knowing I can do whatever. I want a 5, maybe I'll change my mind about favs . These knives make each a favorite each time I use them. I currently have another 14 and a 16 on order. I know the 16 will become a favorite to add to the list!!

Maybe a 5 doesn't sit well with me
