How is the bk5? All of my hiking/camping knives are esee, but man there is something about the bk5 I just dig.. I would use it for all camping duties, I am pretty hard on my knives, can that knife handle batonning? I haven't researched it much.... thanx

It's a big butcher knife and wonderfully light to carry. I'm not battoning mine, but not babying it either. It's more finesse than pry bar.

yes. it batons. you and it may not like it, but it does. nicely. it can do light chopping too. it's fairly robust. i like it. a lot.

totally :)

there's no greater internet/forum sin than to say "i didn't bother looking around much, but i'm going to start this here new thread and ask" :)

only a little fun harshing though :) hinted where to find answers.

we have a search function too.

don't make m00se pull out his lmgtfy :)

It's incredibly light in the hand, but will chop and can survive batonning.
It splits and carves, it makes fuzz sticks, it slices ham.

I did some research, but wanted a little input from someone who has one; not to get stopped by some forum police junky because he has nothing better to do....

Besides, how are we all gonna fulfill the requirements to be a Beckerhead if you have the answers for all the good questions to start a thread, already in the FAQ. The FAQ is evil, evil I tell you. It is a conspiracy to minimize the number of Beckerheads!
;)

i dunno. the FAQ is a great launching point, and has links pointing to some of the top threads, answering a great deal of questions in a short amount of reading.

it just means you need to think of better questions than BK2 vs BK7 :) then we put those in the FAQ and raise the bar some more :D

we do like to have some fun here too. however, a little up front effort pays off.

Damn I still need to get me a BK5

It's a good one buddy. I was a little snot faced when I first got mine because of the spine, then mellowed out with handling\use. It grew on me and I like her.

Easy buddy. This is a good crew around here. They put up with many of my ''tard'' posts and I was also ''guided'' now and then, with likely more to come. And checking out the FAQ's has helped to fill in the vast empty spaces within my cranium.

Yeah, that came across a little harsher than I meant....:)

I've been wanting one as well. I like culinary knives, but mostly they are "fragile" compared to outdoor knives. I have a fondness for butcher knives, but most of those are thin, not 3/16" thick.
If/when I get one, I will strip it. Anybody put the micarta scales on theirs yet?

The sticky passaround thread has some really good input on the BK5, and a horrible video done by me. As far as batoning goes, it can do it as it is like any other knife that can be beat on should the user decide to, but the extreme swedge will trash your baton very quickly.

The way I see it, the BK5 is a campers knife. To me, that means that the user will likely have packed complimentary gear including a saw and ax/hatchet/hawk and another knife. I don't think the BK5 beats the BK2 or BK7 as "the greatest one knife you will ever need."

That's a very good thread:thumbup:. I saw your video on youtube last night and the worst part of the video is you apologizing about how bad the video was. It wasn't bad at all. Apparently you haven't seen bad video reviews . Although, you do need a tripod.:D

I think it could get a lot of use at home in the kitchen as well as while camping/fishing. I can't say that for many other knives......but then again I haven't handled it to see how thick it is.....just going off of the blade design. That thing looks like it could cut through chicken bones, cut through smaller bones as long as they aren't beef spare ribs....those suckers are huge!!!

Thanks. Yeah, I've seen some bad ones. I apologize for coming off so apologetic. A tripod would help, but I was using an iPod. Maybe my four year old son could be my camera man. He would get a kick out of it. If there is anyone who loves knives more than me, it is him!

i've seen far worse videos... even on the BK5 ;) man. oh man.

though, telling us you're taking videos "one handed", yeah.... don't need to know that ;) :barf: :D

i know it's an ipod, but they has "tripods" for those. then you get to use both hands, and don't get that first person shooter effect. select knife! rawr rawr rawr.

also congrats to being the only? guy to make a video...

where those paragraphs at boys? esp you guys without the pictures :) i'm keeping an eye on you all still. special notatation! :D

pictures or it didn't happen, indeed :>

I won't bore some of you with repeat pics of my BK5 cooking. Ok, I lied. Give me an excuse and I'll post pics. It chops through a chicken like butter.

It slices, dices, chops, and takes a great patina in the process...
