i am totally new to this forum and have just recently dove real deep into knives. my question is as a first large knife which bk would one advise to buy first the bk7 or bk9? i plan on buying both but am not sure where to start. i plan on mild camping, and long term shtf any help would be awesome

I would also look into Ontario rd6. Its a great all around knife. send me an email and ill send you some pics with size comparisons to some beckers

thanx for the quick response. just a quick ? why the rd6? although im kinda partial to the beckers and the 1095 steel seems to be real good as compared to the 5160

I'd recommend start with the BK9 and get a feel for it, then decide if you still want the BK7. I have both, but the 9 sees far more use than the 7.

kinda the way i have been leaning. thanking maybe the thumb ramp might go as with the coating replaced with a vinegar bath and stone wash. those knife connection scales are looking pretty good too lol guess cant tell i am looking forward to getting this thing rolling again thanx for the responses

I have the 7 and it does quite a lot; food processing and various tasks dealing with wood processing. There is no doubt that the 9 is a better chopper; but if that is not your main concern/ need, the 7 might be a better all around blade. Here is a so-so pic of my 7 (with a folder)...

I mostly use a smaller knife for most things. But I know the appeal that big/bigger knives have. I don't think you can go wrong with either knife. My first BK was a BK-2. I quickly decided it was too much of a hunk of steel for me to want to carry it. Then I went smaller (BK-15, BK-16, BK-14, BK-24). Picked up a BK-7 which I like. It is still a big knife or at least it is to me. I don't need a big chopper since I will use a short machete for that task, so I have stayed with the BK-7. If I have chopping, the BK-7 gets left at home and I take a short Condor machete like the Pack Golok and a smaller lighter fixed blade.

If chopping is a dominant use and you are comfortable using a larger knife for semi-precise cutting, I'd get the BK-9. If not, I'd go with the BK-7 and get the BK-9 later. It doesn't make a lot of difference as long as you are comfortable with using a larger knife. Either of those knives are a good practical choice for a larger fixed blade.

I really appreciate all the info have given me a lot to think about. Just as I am thinking about the bk7 and a condor parang I think that maybe I should go with the bk9. You guys have given me great info thanx again. The journey continues lol

You can't go wrong with the 9. Or the 7, but I would start with the 9. The 7, 16, 10, etc. will follow soon thereafter.

There has been stories after stories of how the BK9 tops out in so many tasks over any other of the BK series. That itself is it's own testimony. Something to keep in perspective when deciding.

Bk-9. Look up my reviews of the 11, if the 11 can take all that..hehe.. the 9 is .188 thick, comes with a flat grind, hammer pommel, and a fine sheath which also can house a leatherman AND a remora. Get an 11 while youre at it.. heh..hammered my old 11's blade into a weight plate, cutting down into a quarter of an inch deep. 30 whacks on the spine with a hammer, cut deep into the plate, and didnt even roll the edge..and mines edge is thinner than most.

If limited to just the 7 and 9 for comparison purposes, I would take the 9 for wood process/heavy tasks. I would use the 7 over the 9 for "cutting around camp" tasks, especially food prep.

Personally, for light weight camp cutting/food processing, I would choose the 15, 16 or 17.

Get the 9, and then a good 3" fixed or folder.

Okay thanx again. Think I will go with the 9. Have another question after a strip plan on soaking in vinegar and then trying my hand at homemade stone washing. My question is will this yield good results? Plan on trying to match bk24 I know two diff. steels but I haven't seen any pics of a bk9 being stonewashed, just really like the stone wash finish
