Hi guys/gals! First off I would just like to say that his is a kick ass forum! There is such a wide variaty of knowlag here that it's just astonishing! I'm very new to this site so please bare with me if I say something out of place... But anyways I am looking to purchase a Becker and I am considering either the BK9 or the BK7. Now I will be using this as basically a Camp Knife/Survival Knife which I will be hiking/back packing and camping in the woods with it so weight factor will come into play. I would like to carry this particular knife in the small of my back on my belt and was wondering if the 9 inch blade is too hefty for that style of carry or would it look silly doing so? I have seen lots packing the 7 inch that way but was also curious if it was practical to carry a 9 inch that way. Anyways I'm leaning towards the BK-9 but not sure if I,m crazy for wanting to hike with such a large blade... any thoughts and comments would be great as I'm coming to this great comunnity to make my decision. Thanks!

9 inches is pretty big for belt carry but you could do it. If you plan on doing a lot of chopping and batoning, the bk9 is better, but the bk7 is more versatile and could fit into more roles such as food prep. I personally would get the bk9 becuase I love demolishing wood with larger blades when I'm out in the woods. I would probably carry a folding knife or my rat 3 for the rest of my cutting needs. One thing you will probably here a lot on this forum though is GET THEM BOTH! You probably won't regret it and then you can pick which one YOU LIKE the most for your needs because in reality, nobody can tell you what you will like.

I EDC my BK9 on my belt. After the first couple of weeks I stopped noticing the weight entirely when I got accustomed to it. I'm not sure exactly how you're planning on carrying it though. Maybe cut a 15" piece of wood and hold it to your back and see what you think.

But BK7 or BK9, you can't go wrong either way.

And no you're not crazy, unless wanting to be prepared is crazy.

BK9 is my suggestion. Yes, it is big. Yes, it can be carried "scout" style. You will need a custom sheath or re-rig the stock one some kinda way. BK9 ROCKS !!! Not much heavier than the 7. Only you can decide what is right for you. BK7 also ROCKS. If you plan on batoning a lot firewood, BK9. If more "Jack-of-all-trades" & food-prep, BK7. Good luck, My philosophy is: it is much easier to make a large knife do small knife things, than it is to make a small knife do large knife things.

I put the choil on & jimped & stippled the grip on the 7 & added a fire steel flat spot on the extended tang of my BK9 & BK7. Not pretty but pretty darn functional. :D

I'd suggest thinking about this long and hard before laying out the cash for one. The weight to usefulness ratio of a knife like this is pretty terrible. If you just want a cool knife that's one thing but if you're buying purely for function there are much better AND lighter options out there. I've owned a few knives in this class and while they are pretty kick ass they don't get carried because they're heavy and cumbersome. All that said every knife knut needs a big chopper. I'd go with the 9. :D

bk-9

it is large, but its not as large as you might assume. i do not edc one though lol. i use a bk 11/14 to edc with another blade. but a bk-9 is on my belt when i step foot into the woods. its really an amazing knife. also you wouldnt be saving alot of weight going with the bk-7 anyways. i say go big :) \

side note: as long as you wear your pants like a normal human around your waist and not halfway down your butt the weight isn't bad. it doesnt weight me down even at a fast walk or slow jog to catch up

If ur gonna carry a smaller knife too (folder/ bk14/bk16, etc) I would go with the 9... It is awesome. If your looking to carry only one knife, I would go with the 7 or even the bk10. For me smaller cutting tasks are more helpful and often overlooked. Good luck either way. Both great knives and u can't go wrong.

Those are awesome! and they look pretty cool with the choil, I've see quite a few with the custom choil but they also seem to remove the thumb point(not sure what proper term is) what would be the purpose of doing that? I understand what the choil improves the fine work that you can do allowing you to choke up on the blade a bit easier. MAN! does that Bk7 look beastly!

I think both the BK7 and BK9 would be to large for small of the back carry, and it would also get in the way of your rucksack.

I like smaller knives for activities in which keeping weight down is important, so for your intended purpose I'd choose something else from the Becker line (for instance a BK16 or even a BK11).

However, if I had to choose between the BK7 and the BK9, I'd go with the BK9. 6"-7" blades are, in my very personal opinion, too large for small stuff and too small for big stuff. So I'd rather have a nimble 3.5" to 5" blade or a large hefty 9" to 10" blade. Which is why I own a BK9 and a Machax, but not a BK7.

Yes I think if I were to carry the 9 I for surely would have a second smaller blade with me just for small tasks that would be encumbered with such a large blade. But I am still torn over which one I should purchase first. And I think the reason being I own a fairly large Kukri knife, now I bought this off ebay from a knife/sword maker and I paid about $60 for this particular blade and it seems to chop very well but is quite heavy and I have yet to find a reason to pack it with me on hikes. due to the weight and for the fact that I am not usually chopping my own trail.
