BK7 or BK9

Totally depends on what you're going to do with it. Let us have some more info on what you plan on using it for. The 9" will be a better chopper, say for shelter building and splitting wood, and use as a draw knife or small machete. The 7" will do a little more of everything else, like preparing game, food processing, camp chores, whittling, carving etc.

As far as general survival is concerned, you should typically go for the larger of the two blades.

Ask yourself this question: what can I do with the 7 that I can't do with the 9? Probably nothing. There may be some things you can't do with the 7, however, that can be pretty easily accomplished with the 9.

I have a Swamp Rat Bandicoot that I use as a general purpose camp knife, and I was looking for something bigger and heavier for tougher work.

If I had to strap it on and tote it around, I'd go for the 7, of course. The 9 is a much better chopper, but I don't think I'd be mopeing around pineing for a BK9 if I was stranded somewhere with a BK7. Just me, but giant knives are best left in the base camp, or the truck!

roma kid :

Which Becker would be better suited to survival needs: the Becker 7" or 9"?

If you are just carrying that one tool, the 9 easily. It has greater reach and chopping power. This will greatly enhance ease of gathering fuel for fire, shelter building and vegetation for bedding, food and clothing supplements.

I have both the 7 and 9 BK&T Knives and if I had to pick only one I would go with the 9, it feels better and is alot stronger than the 7.
If you could, you should put both of them in your hand, and see what you think.

I prefer the 7 and have used on regularly in the bush for a year now. It does everything I need, light for it's size, strong and able to get sharp easily, but..........if it is wtshtf survival you are talking - I'd go for the bigger knife. The 9 is stronger and a better chopper and I think long term survival would require a bit more manufacture and construction of things.
