BK7 or BK9

I'm stuck between the Ka-Bar Becker BK7 and BK9. I was leaning towards the BK7, but for literally 4-5 dollars more I can get the BK9. My main jobs for either blade would be battoning and chopping. Which should I go for?

BK9 will chop better and gives you a bit more surface to baton.

I have never had a problem choping with my bk7. I have choped threw 6 inches round in 30 wacks. i think it was pine but unsure. kife is super sharp and it is light. I wish it was heavyer and alittle thicker. other than that it can do every thing any other knife can do. its a sweet knife.

I have both - the BK-7 is great for batoning, plenty long enough for any wood that you are likely to choose to baton IMO. But the BK-7 isn't really a good chopper - too short & light to do a quick & efficient job of it. A hatchet/machete/kukri/saw + a BK-7 would work well for most bush/camping.

But if you want a knife that can not only baton but also chop then the BK-9 would be a good choice - the extra length and weight helps it to bite deeper into the wood and can chop through a given piece of wood in LESS than half the time it would take a BK-7.

The only 'issue' I have had with my BK-7 & BK-9 has been the nuts & bolts that hold the scales on. They came loose, I undid them and put a drop of red loctite on each, they have been fine since. Apart from that the only negative I can think of is that the BK-7 isn't a good chopper. The BK-9 is available at around $70 shipped if you look around and is a damn good knife for that kind of money. The 1095 CroVan is a great steel and Shon knows what he is doing when he does the heat treat.

I love my BK7. It's perfect for everything I need it to do. I have no need tor a 9 inch blade. I'm one of those weirdos who thinks knives shouldnt be used for chopping.. I have a hatchet for that.

As soon as you get it, take out the handle screws, put a little loctite on them and screw em back in and they'll be fine. Also to clear one thing up, Gadget.. if you are referring to Shon Rowen.. he heat treats and makes blades for ESEE.. not KABAR/Becker. However, the folks at KABAR are a very close second as far as HT goes. Top notch.
