Which would you consider a better choice for a primary fixed blade in a BoB?

Or, do you have other blades to suggest in this price range.

Thanks.

I love my BK7, a real trooper. I've heard many like the RD series when they were custom, but im not clear on what the production ones were like.

Going production? get the BK7

Going custom? get a RD made from justin.

Here are some pics.

Thanks for the pics. Bk 7's blade thickness is 3/16", correct? Also, do the screws on the handle come loose at all? Do they need some locktite on the threads?

I think the new ones are 3/16th, and yes the handles come completely off. And no locktight is recuired. You can store all sorts of fun survival stuff in them. just make sure you keep the allen key with you!:D

I guess the Rat Cutlery RC-6 should be thrown into consideration here also.

:)

Ahh, you just opend up something else.:D

Out of all of them, I would call the RC6 to the table. I love mine, and would take it over either knife any day.

The knife stock has an ok edge geometry, but I would certainly reprofile it if you could.

Rat has done a great job on heat treat, and to be honest 1095 is a pure blast to use, easy to sharpen, holds a great edge and its strong.

Some various curls on different woods.

Process woods well as well.

Striker is no problem either, that section of the edge was still shaving.

I like my BK7. I have not handled the RD7, though I would like to have one. My understanding is that 5160 is an excellent steel for larger knives that may be used for chopping.

I really like the new Becker handle slabs, they fit my hand a little better than the old Cam version. i have heard some complaints about the screws coming loose. I would say add some blue locktite or maybe permatex, so you can still get them off if you need to do some serious cleaning.

Becker, Ranger and RAT all are great knives.

I personally am not a fan of polymer handles so I would go for micarta. I would get the RD.

Get the BK-7 and the optional micarta slabs and you've spent around $100.

all are great, all would more than do the job, if you could only handle them, then you'd know which suits you best.

I have an older RD7, luv that thing, I have truly beat on it, and Justin cleaned up my foolishness (for free).

but for a b.o.b. I feel they are too big, I'd look into an F1 or something under 4"
you really pack b.o.b.s and space and size is important, just my thoughts ;)

here's my RD7 (satin, G10):

I had the scales switched out with Micarta since.
