Can you guys tell me why I should get a BK7 over the ESEE6? I am an ESEE user, I normally use the 5 and 3 on outdoor pursuits, but I'd love to try the BK7 out... thoughts? Help me pull the trigger!

I think the BK7 has a better handle, and you get more blade without the choil. I have both, and they are both great knives, I just like how versitile the BK7 is.

There is really no major difference between the two, honestly, except the handle and choil.

Plus, if you get your ESEE's wet, they will melt. Those things are made outta hard PlayDoh. I dropped my ESEE3 on my couch once, and chipped the edge all up on the Scotch Guard. :D

Take the BKT challenge, get one, if you don't fall head over heels in love with it, I'll buy it off you, for what you have in it. Reciept needed, though.

Oh, and on another note, more than once, I've hear Jeff Randall say, "That BK7 is one of my favorite knives, best one you ever came up with, Ethan."

The price alone makes me want to try one of these. I am really interested in trying one out. It will be nice to have a thinner blade "big knife" too. I use the hell out of my ESEE 5 but sometimes finer woodwork can really be a problem (hence the ESEE 3). I am really close to pulling the trigger on one of these... I just don't know for sure. What would be a good dealer to look to buy from? I use NewGraham a lot and like their service. Have any experience sharpening it on the Fallkniven DC4? That's my go-to field stone.

That's a tough one as I have the highest regard for ESEE and Becker. But, for the difference in price I don't think you could do much better than a 7. It is a seriously great blade. If you get it and don't like it and Moose is short on cash at the time, I will give you the same deal. Won't be the 1st time I bought multiples of a great knife.

If you decide on one I would recommend Rhymes with Bo Mars. That is where I have bought all 3 of mine.

Edited to add: Mike at New Graham is awesome. Have bought quite a few knives from him. Don't know what the price of a 7 is over there but I picked mine up from Tomar's for 65 and change.

Any comments on the sheath? I really like the stock ESEE sheaths, which is nice, because then you don't have to drop another ~$50 on a new sheath.

Hope I don't get flogged here but I think the ESEE sheaths are better. Perhaps it's just personal taste. Don't get me wrong, the 7 sheath is good enough for the task but it is a bit bulky for my taste. The knife rattles a bit in the sheath but it has a nice external pocket that you can put some kit in or an extra folder. Wide belt loop and holes for a leg lashing. It's okay and gets the job done.

The sheath is....well it just is. Its serviceable and will keep your blade in it and will hold it there. But esee does well with their sheaths. Don't spend 60 spend 45 on a long spec ops, its good stuff plus you get to pick your color and it comes with a pouch and cord. Btw the 7 is a great knife.

The seven is light and nimble yet plenty stout. Good length for batoning plus it's a slicer. The tip is articulate enough for fine work and bushcrafting. Not a bad choice for an all around dirt knife. Best of all, it has the most comfortable handle ever put on a knife.

And, it's perty...:D

When I first started looking at "real" knives, I thought I would never need something in that size range.

Then I won a KaBar USMC.

Now I can't help but see the BK7 as the evolution of the USMC. Its not gonna be a "chopper", but it'll chop. It has enough length for batoning anything of reasonable length (one of the few shortcomings of the BK2 in my opinion is that the thickness makes it an excellent batoner, but that its too short for the wood its thickness is capable of easily splitting). It should slice like my BK9 (aka, pretty good for a big-un), and be easier to carry around. Plus, like others have said, the handle design is excellent, you can use them for hours with no fatigue or blistering.

Its on my list, thats for sure.

Plus, you'd be on your way to becoming a BeckerHead :D.

So long as you have "normal" sized hands, the Becker grivory handles are nice -- the ESEE 6 has the same handles as the 5, but is easier to do camp type cutting chores because it's 3/16" thick, not 1\4" -- the BK 7 & 10 are the same thickness as the ESEE 6, but like folks say - no choil. (this is a plus to me)
It's hard to find a better factory sheath than what ESEE puts out -- that's part of the price difference.
Try the BK7 -- if you don't like it, I'm sure you won't have any issues finding it a new home with one of the guys here -- then go buy the ESEE. If you do like it, get the Spec ops sheath or have something custom built. (for that matter, leather and/or kydex aren't that hard to work with, make your own)

best of luck either way!

Have em both, love em both. But the 7 is the one I would keep if I had to chose only one. The ESEE 6 comes with a crappy sheath compared to the 4, 5 or Junglas. Get a spec-ops or custom kydex and you will be good to go with the BK7

I like the esee 6 more than the BK7. We like what we like.

The Bk7 is half the cost and is a great knife.

Buy a BK7 you won't regret it.
