BK7 Sheath. Fixed.

Looking at my BK7 for the third time today, I finally had enough of the sheath. Well, I mostly had enough with myself and my irrational distain for the sheath. I hate how the knife rattles around in there and has zero retention, but I mostly hated how much I hated this.

I have no money for kydex or leather, and with the exception of the retention, I like the sheath fine. So, after much bitching on my part, I decided to just fix it.

1. Cut up the cardboard box that my BK11 CSM was delivered in until you have a single strip.
2. Stuff the strip into the sheath and cut off the excess hanging out.
3. Use some black tape to finish off the tape and make it look all nice.
4. Marvel at the perfect retention and silence the sheath now offers.

Done. Simple. Stupid. Cheaper than dirt. No rattle. No falling out.

If the cardboard gets funky, I can replace it in seconds. :jerkit: If I plan on getting it wet, I can laminate a piece with tape. The retention that this provides is perfect for me. Perfect.

I know that some have talked about stuffing rubber in there. I'm sure that would work fine as well, but this is what worked for me.

I'd post pics, but do you all really need to see what cardboard stuffed into the sheath looks like? I'll tell you: it looks fine.

I'm glad you didn't send it in for a warranty repair, LMAO. I've heard of some guys sending their ESEE knives back because the paint was scratched. Seriously.

Good work, glad you got if fixed.

That's how you do that. My son used an inner tube chunk with similar (I assume) results. Nice one!

Look, if I want pretty paint, that's my business. That's why I retain a full-time service to touch up my knives after every usage. :p

Nice, simple fix. Lovin' it! I don't use my stock sheath anymore, but I'm thinking about digging it out and playing with that insert a little bit myself. I've heard of guys heating it up and forming it to their blades...I'm all thumbs, but maybe it'll work for me. Maybe...

...anyway, nice job dude!

I've heard people suggest this, but never anyone who has actually tried it. The plastic inside the KA-BAR sheaths does not seem like kydex (not thermoplastic), but rather some kind plastic formed via blow-mold, almost like a milk jug material. I could be way wrong on this. I have no idea how it will heat up.

I've taken out the insert on a Camillus sheath (not easy) and tried to mold one of them. I now just have a poorly shaped mess of kydex that is doing nothing more than waiting for me to give it another try.

Good mod,My old BK9 sheath has bugged me for the last 7 years.I will give that tip a try.I don't trust myself with cutting the sheath to get at the liner, then heating the liner up to form. Then my 9 would be sheathless!:o

I just got my bk9 for Christmas from my wife .(thank you so much, sweetie!)

I am thinking of shoving some neomidium magnets behind the insert to help with retention and rattle. The ones I have at home are too small (about 1/2 inch), but I think a few of a larger diameter (1 to 1 an1/2 inch just might do the trick. Has anyone else tried this?

There are some gun holsters that use neomydium magnets in various ways. It makes sense that they could be used effectively on knife sheaths. An unintended consequence might be other stuff sticking to your sheath.

Waxed cardboard from a milk carton or some of that clear plastic from a big piece of "clam shell" packaging might work well for the OP's idea of using inserts.

Interesting thought, but on an 8 year old thread?

I posted a thread some time ago re: BK 7 sheath and my solutions. There is an easy way to remove the liner and I used a strip from a plastic gallon milk jug to correct rattle and retention. I melted the strip of milk carton in the oven with a couple of wood skewers under the plastic to create ridges. When inserted into the liner, the ridges kind of self adjust with pressure from the blade inserted. The strip is long enough to fold over behind the liner between it and he sheath. Nice retention without impeding the draw. I used a Chicago screw in place of some stitching to retain the liner in the sheath. It is now easy to remove and replace at will for cleaning.

Thanks to photobucket getting greedy, most of the photos don't show. If you need to see them, pm me and Ill see if I can find the originals. Good Luck.

bootzon,

I read your old thread. You created some nice innovations. It is a good read as is, but I bet it was great with the now "stolen" pictures.

I don't think some understand the importance of being able to clean a sheath. For a game knife especially, sometimes you are forced to sheath the knife somewhat bloody. Blood is pretty corrosive, so you then need to clean the knife and sheath as soon as you are able.
