I don't object to this sized hiking knife. It it is in my repertoire. I have tended toward a lighter knife (the Buck 639V primarily) in the past, but now that I've added so many knives I expect to carry this size more often:

The two to the right were included with the Bowies but they are closer in size to the BK7. The one on the far left, a Shrade Old timer I just replaced, gave the beat up one that I carried on hikes to my son. In size it is closer to the BK2 but I forgot to put it there. The one to the left of the BK7 I like a lot and have carried on several hikes. It has the cheap-type sheath material the Becker favors but a more minimalistic version. I suspect to be cutting through the sheath (the way some reviewers say the Becker knives will do) and might use it more if I had backup sheaths. One of the things I like about Becker, like my Jeep: There are people making after-market accessories. I doubt that is true of this very-nicely made Damascus however.

Fishing knife. Fighting knife. Kitchen knife. Camping knife. And two fancy knives. At least that's what I see:-)
It's not a bad collection you have there. Though I would like to see 3 & 5 swap handles. Then again 5 might look to beckerish. And 3 to kabarish. Damn it, the brain washing worked:D

In all my years of free-diving and ordinary fishing I never once used the Schrade Old Timer as a fishing knife. It is advertised as a hunting knife and I used it simply for hiking, at least the previous model that I gave to my son. I have yet to use this one for anything and may not, but I like having it. I also recently gave my son some old fishing knives. However I also have a Buck fishing knife which I used a lot when fishing off my sail boat. It is the second one from the left in the following photo:

The Damascus to the left of the BK7 does have a kitchen-knife look about it but it is slightly heavier than the bK7 and the blade is slightly wider. The blade of the Damascus doesn't begin to narrow until near the tip; so I'm guessing that if we were to take the handles off the Damascus would be seen to be even more heavy than the BK7. It has an excellent edge and seems to hold its sharpness. Despite its resemblance to a kitchen knife I don't feel "under-knifed" when hiking with this one. I feel "under-sheathed" but then I have felt that way about all the Becker sheaths as well.

The 7 is the reason I got into Beckers.
Already had a couple big choppers/camp knives, smaller fixed blades, and neck knives.
I wanted something to replace my vintage KaBar...it was time to put her to pasture so I could pass her on to my girls someday.
Read about the 7 on the interwebs, found this place, and it's all been amazing since then.
