i am about to strip the coating off my bk7. however i don't want to lose the kabar logo. i've heard you can etch the logo before stripping. how does one do this? can this be done with mustard or vinegar or anything else you can find at home or do i need specialized ingredients to etch the logo into the steel?
thanks

As I found, people use PCB Etchant Solution from Radio Shack.

You just apply it to logo, like a small pool around it.After hour or so,remove it(wash it down). Repeat process a few time. Acid will burn only logo ,black coating will stay untouched. When you burn it deep enough, remove the coating.

PCB etchant my friend. Its circuit board etchant. This is the only way I currently know of... here are some threads..

These may not be actual "how to" threads but they are out there I am just lazy. Seriously though its like this...

1.Leave coating on.

2.Clean blade, ensuring its free from oils.

3.Apply etchant to logo.

4.wait. For minutes/hours however deep you want to go.

5.Wash etchant away... wash away from the edge not towards it.

6.Apply more or dont depending on how deep you want it.

7.Remove Coating.

8.Chop/carve/maul anything you want with your knife!

9.Have fun

Leaving the coating on acts like a resist or mask from the PCB etchant allowing the displayed logo to be the only place etched. Throw out a search in bladeforums or use the google to find out more! Maybe some etching pros might stop by in this thread and give you the skinny. Have fun.

thanks a lot guys super helfpul:thumbup:
will hit up radio shack first thing tomorrow!

If you cover the cuttin edge (or anything that is uncoated), you can dunk the whole blade in an et chant bath. It works well, once in a while pull the blade out of the bath, brush off the logos and put it back in. You can also reuse the solution a couple times as well. Whatever you do though, don't use it on any bare metal- I learned that lesson the hard way.

I stripped my BK9 this morning and with no etching, this is what the logo looks like:

thats surprising..i thought without etching the logo would completely disappear. isnt the logo just gaps in the coating and not laser etched on beckers now?

This is the newest version and the logo is smooth to the touch, but etched into the metal. It actually looks much cleaner in real life than in the pic. That is a a much magnified version. It could probably be sanded off, but mine looks great after the stripping alone. It also has the BK9 logo on the other side.

I did not etch my 7 before stripping. This was the new version, picked up just a couple months ago:

The laser etching is on the surface and probably just a little deeper. If you were to go to town sanding that thang... well the logo will pull a disappearing act on you. Mainly etching the logo gives it more depth after the strip... I am going out on a limb to say this is because people really liked the recessed logos on the stamped models, or they just wanted to etch it to make it more apparent.
