BK7 vs Ka-bar 1217

Thinking they are pretty similiar in size

i know the bk7 is full tang and has the thumb ramp
the ka-bar 1217 is rat tang and butt cap and i presume noticibly lighter

for folks that have both, which do you prefer and why? Has anyone anyone broke a ka-bar in a manner that you believe the bk7 would have survived?

just curious and would appreciate your thoughts

Ka-Bar Large Bowie. A few whacks to baton some wood and BAM. She snapped in half.

I own the next gen and not the 1217, but the bk7 is my favorite. Although you should get em both. Won't hurt your pocket too much either. Get the hard case sheath on the Ka Bar, the leather is garbage. Between the leather sheath for the Ka Bar and cardboard I would choose cardboard.

Actually my money was refunded before I heard back from Ka-Bar. The refund was darn near instantaneous so I bought an Ontario instead. I did correspond with a very nice woman with Ka-Bar and she informed me just by looking at the pics she would replace it. That was my first experience with Ka-bar and it is what led me to Bladeforum.com and to the Becker forum. Now I am a Beckerhead and the rest is history.

Just curious. What ontario did you buy?
 
I dropped an old Ka-Bar from about 4'-5' onto concrete & the butt cap broke off. I was young then (in the Army) & did not know about thier excellent customer service, so i just threw it away. Butt caps are made from powdered metal i believe. I am pretty sure a BK7 would not have broke by doing that. Here is my disclamer---i know that any mfg can have a bad blade slip through thier Q Control.

I love my SP10 Marine Raider Bowie, so far.
