Hey everyone,

So, a few days ago, upnorth had sent out a couple knives to me. They arrived today, and of course, I was itching to take a look at them. Didn't get a chance to take them out tonight, however I should get a chance tomorrow.

After un-boxing them, the first two things that came to mind were one, the pot-belly is frigging thick! and two, the BK5 may have just became that knife I have been looking for, has the size of the RC, but that perfect thickness... Upnorth, we may have to talk...:D

First, one for reference, decent sized knives for sure. As you can see, non of these knives live on a shelf.

The pot-belly is an interesting knife, its going to take some fiddling with to understand, the handle is much different then anything I've used, and that .25" thick blade is... a change.. but i'm thinking with the high hollow grind, it may be of use yet.

All together.

And I found the BK5 looked much better in the pot-bellys sheath.

So, up shot?

I am impressed with the BK5, and still optimistic with the pot-belly, we shall see...

Hey Fonly -

The 'pot-belly' has a very different edge geometry than the BK5 - I'd think they would cut/handle quite differently?

Take that BK5 outta that sheath!
The following is my opinion only!
I think you will find the Potbelly whoops the ass outta that hole group.
The BK5 is great in the kitchen, does pretty good at whittling, and only "good" at chopping.
The Potbelly shocked me, and after much thinking about it..it is one of the top Survival knives I own. The strange and ugly handle, is pretty well thought out. Hold it, try different grips..it works.
The blade shape and grind all lend itself to hard use, and it chops like a 10inch knife. The sheath is overbuilt for the cost of the knife...makes you wonder why other knives come with such cheap sheaths.
No matter which one you like, looks like a good bunch of knives that would all kick some butt.

Well bud, beat the hell out of them. I have an ESEE 4 coming in and never took fully to the Potbelly because I already have that Micarta gripped BK-2. I would be perfectly content to have you keep the Potbelly and BK-5, and just send the RC 6 to me. I have more than enough cutting tools as is and would like to go ESEE for a change. I'm in a down sizing mood lately. Check them out for a while and get back to me if it works for you. :)

Second knife from the left
Black handle, shiny steel (with a laminate line?)
What is it and how is it?

Does the pot belly feel and handle like a small kukri?
How is the sweeping blade of the BK 5 like to use?

thanks

@ neeman - i believe the knife you're asking about is a Cold Steel Master Hunter in Carbon V steel (Fonly described it below the pic).

Hey neeman, yes, that in an older master hunter from coldsteel, not laminate though, just carbon V with a mustard patina. looks goo though eh? :D

haven't had a chance to really use them, however it does feel forward heavy like you would expect with a kuk, the BK5 is a mean slicer for the size of knife it is.
