I posted this on maintenance forum, but someone suggested I post it here also. I may get this knife, but wanted to grind the rear bottom of handle to eliminate the handle "hook", but I'm afraid I will grind into the hole for the lanyard; I will leave the pommel intact. I also want to remove the spine ramp/notches to make the spine flat. I'd also like to grind a choil for choking up on handle. Anybody done this? Any pics? Thoughts? Finally, what is thickness of these blades? is it .188 or is it .250?
Thanks.

Grinding the thumb ramp and adding a choil are simple enough mods and a couple of guys have done em, not only to the 7 but the 9 and 10 as well. Now for grinding down the rear handle point, do you plan on adding your own custom handle material? There are a couple of guys who reshape the handles when adding their own g10 or wood handles, again I've seen it done on a bunch of different Becker blades since the handle shape and scales are universal throughout the full size line.

Don't have a 7 but here are my mods to my bk10 by grinding down the thumb ramp, and adding a choil.

Also when you grind off the thumb ramp there will be one notch left in the spine (right at the start of the handle, you can see 2 on mine and that's becuz I added the firesteel notch in the center before I decided to grind the ramp) Some guys leave as is, some guys jimp around it to match, and other grind it out for a firesteel notch for throwing wicked sparks. Just an fyi

You guys are great. I plan on using same scales, just grind them down on belt grinder (2x48) at same time I grind metal. I like Clich's choil, looks perfect. Is the blade thickness on new BK7's .188 or .250?

.188 sorry missed that part of your question. I get to excited to post pics :D

Im not sure about grinding the grivory handle (unless your going micarta) someone correct me if im wrong but wont that melt the grivory and leave a messy finish? I've never done it but that seems like it would be a logical result. But again I could be wrong.

Someone else should be along shortly, don't worry im not the only one here :D

Yeah, grivory would melt. It is also hollow, so unless you are planning on removing very little, you need to look at micarta or another handle material.

Geez guys, here, lemme try.

Welcome to the Becker forum gfe76, and Bladeforums, glad you stopped in.

When you're grinding off metal from the BK7, just keep it cool enough to touch it to your lips. Take your time, you can always take off more metal, but you can't put it back.

Grivory is not going to work here for what you want. Its hollow with a web substructure for strength, so, if you are wanting to take the "hook" off the end, better go with something solid, like micarta, G10, Carbon fibre, something like that.

Also, wear a mask when you are working with any of those material, full respirator would be better, IMO.

I have ground the ramps off of my 9, 10, and a 7 before (not currently), so, its easy to do.

Just remember, don't get that metal too hot, or you will cause the temper to fade. On the handle, thats really not that bad, so, you have some room for error.

Once again, welcome to the Becker forum and Bladeforums, stick around, always something good going on here.

Thanks again to all. Did not know handle was hollow/webbed---probably will go with G10--but I wasn't planning on making new scales, so I may reconsider---Although I am handy with tools, I'm no knifemaker.

Duno if prefer g10, but if you went with micarta your plan would work. Just bolt em down and have at it. Like moose said keep it cool, a little at a time. Belt sanders get hot quick so I usually option for my dremel if it allows. when I did my ramp and clip point I use the dremel to get it just about there, then the belt sander to square it off and make it plumb. I also found that if I used a coarse sanding drum, instead of a grinding wheel on the dremel, it stayed cooler longer

afaik, the BK7s were never .250 thick

see the handy database for thicknesses of various models

:)

Clich,I probably will go with micarta if I do it. Yes, coarse paper is cooler (more air). Slapper, I like the epoxy idea...I may just do it before I go to micarta, but Clich is right that two slabs of micarta bolted to handle and then "have at it." I'm going to a knife show here in Jax next month. I would like to find a "used" one to play around with these mods in case I screw something up, but I doubt I find a used one....seems like once someone gets this knife he never wants to sell it.

Hey gfe76, welcome to the forum.

There's one guy, goes by ExtremeSurvival here, who made some awesome micarta grips for his Camillus BK-10, I think you might like what he did to his handle.

You've seen what I did, (thanks for linking me slapper :D), I suggest you read my thread and try it. I would leave some of the hook part there, because it gives you added grip when chopping. You have to think about a lanyard hole too.

Welcome
The bk7 is a great knife.
Hope you don't recosider buying one.
Good luck with mods.

Trailbum, just ordered one off Amazon ($65, and that includes shipping). Twinsticks, I like the choil..how did you do it (make it simple for me, ok?)...looks like you just used a cylindrical grinding wheel on a die grinder about 3/4" in diameter.
