I am sure I am not stating anything new here, but these two are absolutely awesome knives. I have already given the BK9 bit of a workout in the woodshed, amazing! The BK10 was delegated to dinner duty (yes, I got some strange looks).

They are both very tough, hard use knives. Now I just have to try and bring myself to use them to the fullest and not baby them.

My only gripe is with the BK10 sheath. Maybe I am being too picky, but the metal eyelets (both top and bottom) are not in the material properly. It looks as if they would come out with a decent tug. Also, the kydex insert is not glued in very well and is extremely tight on the blade, it’s a real effort to get the knife in there, and won’t do the finish all that much good either. The BK9 sheath is spot on in every way! Has anyone else had sheath problems like this?

Apart from that, excellent knives, I look forward to getting a real chance to use them! To use the great Australian cliché of Crocodile Dundee; Looks at other knife "That's not a knife...", Pulls out Becker "THAT's a knife!” :D:D:D

I have attached a few pics of the new family members. The perfect pair!

Congratulations on yourlatest acquisitions.
I have the BK9. It is an excellent knife with an almost unbelievable price tag.

Were you cutting meat with your BK-10 prior to taking the pic? Looks like blood on the blade! Thanks for the side by side comparison photo, I can get a good feel for the 10's size now. I have the BK-9 and absolutely love it. Don't worry about babying them, they are tougher than heck. Bash away and have fun!

You might want to take the kydex insert out and see how the knife fits in best(4 different ways to insert into the kydex) and put it back in the sheath that way with some shoe goo. I did this to mine and it worked good.

Fabian,
Glad you like your knives! Use your Beckers hard....if you have any functional problems with your sheaths[if those eyelets pop out], let us know, and we will take care of you. We have not been experiencing issues with the eyelets.

Personally, I remove the kydex insert from all my sheaths and mold them for a more tight fit on the exact blade the sheath is being used for. Then I glue the insert back in the sheath.

BTW, Nice PICS!

Will...I'm curious; Why do the kydex inserts fit the blade so loosly in the first place? With a couple of my BK sheaths, it feels like there is enough room for 2 knives in it...If I tip the knife even slightly down from horizontal, the knife will slide right out without slowing down, and the blade in the sheath rattles like a '52 Ford pick-up going down a bumpy road!.

Hey Glockman

I will try to shed a little light on this....Sheaths are the bane of knife makers They are almost always made by someone else and that someone else is almost always far enough away that it is difficult to conveiently get your hands around their necks when the knife does not fit!!! BUT, seriously there are a lot of minor variables that frequently add up to a sloppy fit... if the steel is off thickness by a thou or two , add minor coating thickness variations and then when you add a touch of operator variance when the insert is formed you have a noisy sheath. You can get around this by hand fitting each insert to each individual knife but we are trying to make knives that real world people like soldiers and marines can buy without sacrificing the grocery money... and this is a minor problem that even the stumble fingered can fix with a toaster oven or regular oven or heat gun or a smallpiece of webbing in a very short time. Every product is a trade off of values vs. price. The BK's 1-5 have high dollar molded Kydex sheaths and their retail prices reflect the quite large price differential Camillus has to pay. Kydex does make a great insert, it is strong and easy to mold, all in all quite a polite material and if you guys will only start buying Beckers by the hundreds of thousands we will start injection molding or extruding the inserts to incredibly exact tolerances. To end on a historical note when I first started to make Machaxes I paid almost twenty bucks for a sheath which was more than the knife cost to make and it made the price of my knives damn near prohibitive!

Hope this answers your Question....
All Best

Ethan...The quality of the knife far out-weighs the shortcomings of the sheath. These "BK" knives are pretty darn hard to beat for the price asked for them.

To go alittle off-topic; Are there any plans in the works to do something about the slipperyness of the handles?...Something like a bead-blast?

Hey Glockman

By your question I must assume you feel that the smooth slightly textured, but almost perfect handle that graces the Becker knives is in need of some improvement. I tried very hard to come up with a ""working" handle. By that I mean one that when you use say a Machax or Patrol Machete for long periods of time clearing bamboo or bush honeysuckle (two miscreants that infect my acreage in real abundance and which offer a blister inducing brittle hardness when struck ineffeiciently) you can lift a can of beer at the end of the day without screaming in pain from the bleeding blisters raised by a too textured surface. I think the shape of the Becker handle should keep it secure in the hand. I have used a bunch of machetes, axes,Bowies, brush hooks(UGH) and other assorted slicers, dicers and whackers over the last forty- five years and I HATE the ones that tear up my hands and raise blisters and give me pain. I have never had a Becker handle raise a blister or rub my hands raw nor have I had one slip out of my hand. I do try to wear gloves when in the woods but "in the lab " (read shop) I use bare hands and some times with a new design I will whittle and chop and split for hours to really "know" the blade.
Have I evaluated other texture options....sure. WARNING! Will and I both take careful note when you guys sound off. I collect knives and I test
and evaluate relentlessly other peopls products and how a handle is textured is one of the things I look at very closely. Every aspect of the Beckers is under constant evaluation. I want to make a "perfect" knife and I will (and DO) listen to just about any body with a fresh idea. I just got my Fisk SOUTHWEST BOWIE today and the handle is as smooth as a baby's butt .....I am certain that it won't slip from bloody or sweaty hands because the SHAPE is right.

Dan... I hope you take this the right way because you are one of the commentators on the forums who I really enjoy reading....try out some different textures with bare hands....new handles are only five bucks a pop and when you are sure youve got em better send them to me and if we change (a five thousand + mistake if we are wrong) you get a bunch of handles and a case of beer!!

I always enjoy your questions and I hope you will make it to the BLADE Show so we can discuss this over a beer(or two)!!!

All Best....

Ethan,
I have been reading about your knives for quite sometime now and I finally broke down and bought the BK10. I currently have an Ontario TAK in D2, although its a very nice knife and all im just not sure how much I like it. I have this strange appeal to the BK10. I have big hands. And sometimes micarta handles are nice, they feel funny to me on the TAK. Im anxious to get the BK10 it should arrive on Thursday.

wow its really great to see the knifemaker coment on one of his knives here. I have the bk7 and its my favorite, i did add the micarta handle and I like it a lot better than the standard scales, it just adds enough weight to the handle to change the balance to where its perfect for me. chops and cuts and holds an edge far longer with less touch up than i would have believed.

thanks for the knife at a outstanding price.

Giz:

The thread was almost 3 years old and Ethan hasn't posted here on BF in over two years... (that info can be checked in his profile.)

I only say this because I don't want you to be disappointed if Ethan doesn't respond (and on all counts, he IS a great guy!)

Congrats on the Beckers, they've got great bang-for-the-buck! Beat 'em up. They can take it!

Cricket,

Did you make micarta handles for it, or is there some place you can buy them. I have a BK-1, Bk-2, and Bk-7...I love all of them and am quite happy with the handle as is, but I think an unfinished micarta handle in the same shape/size would be better. These knives are an incredibly good deal for what they are, and I wouldn't trade them for the world.

hi bigbcustom, i got them from camillus they arn't the same profile as the standard grips they are flater and have some grooves on the sides, its a olive color you get when you sand black micarta.

cost 27.00 about including shipping.

take it easy
