So I was watching the bears defense pound the snot out of the titans (sorry Ethan et.al) and decided to get my winter backpacking/trail balazing/possible camping rig started. Decided on the BK9 as the big chopper, the BK24 as the small, the Leatherman Core as the catch all, along with a light my fire army model for sparks. Shown with one of my favorite all around knives a US made S30V Gator with Ben and Carlson scales. I attached the 24's kydex to the 9's somewhat lacking sheath with some 550. I will be putting a 550 wrist lanyard on the 9 to help keep me safe. I put a couple ranger bands over the bottom of the 24, but the might cover the entire sheath in them to keep the burrs and stickers from attaching to the sheath of the 9. Anyone else have good ways to attach a BK14 or 24 to the BK9 sheath without buying/making a new 9 sheath? Ethan if you read this I would love the BK24 made into the BK34 with S30V and lightly polished. Sorry for the slightly misleading title.Go Bears!!!

holycrapballs

Looks like your method is about the best one there is to attach the stock sheaths to each other. As you likely already know your best bet is to make your own custom sheath.

I bought a sheath from AZWelke here on BFC and have since built a press and am working on a system to incorporate a smaller blade and firesteel onto the BK9 sheath that I carry on a shoulder strap. Then similar systems for some other blades.

Hey Diced......

You have good taste in steels......I want one in A2-not that it would be much, if any better a blade, but I have an emotional thing about A2......BUT, I would certainly settle for one in S30V and I am actually VERY happy with the D2........Wait 'til you have a chance to use your 24 for a while and perhaps your S30 cravings will subside.........I suspect they will.......D2 is really GOOD stuff when cooked properly and Tooj has a D2 mentor in Bob Dozier that cannot be beat......

I remember seeing a show on Discovery about the bear belonging to the paw is in the pic above. A hunter got it legally I believe on Kodiak Island but the thing was so freakishly big they did a bunch of genetic testing to see if was a genetically decedent from some pre-historic monster bear, they also had a polar bear/brown bear hybrid that happened naturally on the same show. The Pic of Urlacher is kind of funny, looks like he is about to break out in an Irish jig. The sheaths seem pretty well attached, don't think I will need to worry about it falling off going through brush etc (my original concern). Now I will just plead with the wife to braid me a big para cord lanyard for a shoulder harness through the 9 sheath.

Thanks Ethan for the response, yea I am liking the D2 so far have not used it much but it seems like the edge will last a long time. I was initailly concerned about rust on the D2 because I thought there was some on it when it arrived (There was not it was polishing compound :p) Even the 1095 they do has excellent edge retention.

Hey diced....

Plenty good knife steels.........Not so many good heat treated blades.......Even 420 if it is cooked just right works ok.....Not my fav,BUT when all is said and done; an edge NEEDS to last for three days of use......If you need more you forgot to tell someone where you went or forgot a stone or both.......More is better, mind, but I use a three day standard when I think about steels.....If you get Edge retention TOO good you can't sharpen the sob.....That is why I freaking LOOVE 1095 and 1095CV in particular.....An almost perfect balance of edge retention and ease of sharpening combined with an aggressive nature........I am gonna edc the 24 for a few months and see how it stacks up.....Hunting season should help give me a pretty clear picture........Dozier swears by D2 and he has been and done a bunch and has the smallest bs to weight ratio of almost anyone I have ever met.......

I love the combination you have going there. A very nice use of space with a lot of function and redundancy. Nice work.

Totally agree with you Ethan 3 days of sharp is a pretty good benchmark. I usually try to keep one blade that I avoid abusing and use for cutting food etc. I think that your design of the 14/24 makes it a formidable hunting knife. Fur season opened today here and am looking forward to testing it out.

I have Light my fire army model in the sheath (not shown) and will add a lighter and some tinder (char cloth or tinder tabs) and a small box of waterproof matches. I am going to try a Trangia alcohol stove with a wood-gas burner backup (also works as the wind screen/pot base for the alcohol burner) to get away from my Brunton backpacker model burner, its fast to boil but I hate carrying and being dependent on white gas. Always have too many redundant methods in terms of fire/knives/illumination but will pare down based on pack weight. Always have the small version of the SAS survival manual and a woodcarving book. I have signal devices and a compass but rarely a map, but where I go I cant get too lost just keep on a bearing will get me to a road. I am just starting a vacation where I plan on doing some hunting, fishing, hiking and possible camping. I kind of doubt I will pull any multiple nights in the next two weeks because one cold night usually reminds me why a warm house and comfy bed are good. I have never hammock camped during this time of year so it will be interesting to see how it works with my homemade hammock liner of refletix duct insulation (I about froze in the spring by not having an insulating layer and it was a balmy 45 at night).
