BK9 goes fishing

Dunno about you guys but I like using my Beckers for absurd things. A couple of weeks ago, I cleaned a mess of panfish w/ my BK2 so tonight, I had to do a repeat with the BK9.

Forgot to take my ultimate fish scaler (a spoon - works like a miracle) so first order of business was to make one. Found some stacked firewood from a long forgotten campout.

Splitting it down to size...

Batoned off a little chunk and shaped it for scraping. Sure I could use the BK9 spine like I did the BK2 but meh...

Caught some fish. Note the time is 2 after 4... 42... never mind...

... and processed them. I started just cutting the heads off but quickly realized it would be faster to baton them. Heh - worked perfectly! Scraper also worked great...

Brought them home and tomorrow we feast. Man I like these knives.

GingivitisKahn, when it comes to fishing, any knife is a good one . . . :)
I had a gentlemen a few years ago teach me about the "spoon scaler", & it does work great as you said. I fish mostly for bass, but nothing beats bluegill or crappie for bun size sandwiches. We have a state reserve about 20 miles from us with a ton of small ponds & marshes that are loaded with bluegill. A few hours there & we have our week-end cookout entree . . . .
Great shots of the knife by the way, glad you had a good time.
Be safe.

Cool picks buddy. I popped the wings off ptarmigan with my Brute a few years back. Might as well use the darn things, they are cutting tools.

Thats cheating. I assume you just dipped the '9 blade in the water and all the fish jumped out in fear?

Nice touch with the Fish Clock. At first I saw the pic and noticed the time and thought OH Shit, I am a dork. Then read your comment about the time. Crisis averted.

You know you can use your thumb for scaling.

Was fun stuff. So what do you do, push the thumb nail from the tail to the head, taking a track of scales with you? I use my thumb for a final check to make sure I got 'em all but it seems like it would take a while to do the whole fish like that.

I hate fish with a passion so if my 9 cut fish open the smell would drive me nuts. I'd be forced to take the handle off the knife and scub everything, then soak everything in bleach for hours. Nice pics though and love the 4:02 fish clock.

Question. I have cleaned many perch and bluegill but always just used a knife to scrape off the scales. Does the type of "scraper" you made work better than a knife? and I'm not to sure about the thumb  method.

I always end up using the knife spine. Worked great last weekend.

Your fishes are too small compared with BK9. You need to catch big fishes to match it!

Agreed - that or I need to use a necker. Maybe next time. :D

My BK9 still smells of fish - doesn't bug me as much as the mustard smell on my BK11 after applying the patina. Took forever to wear off.

My wooden scraper worked WAY better than my BK2 spine did a few weeks ago and a spoon works better still. Neither of those will cut the farg out of you if you mess up either.

And about that fish clock....are you sure it wasn't 4:20. ;)

I was thinking I needed to catch a few more to make it a digital :p

Thumb from tail to head is exactly what I do. This way I don't have scales flying about making a large mess. Smaller mess, easier clean up, less critters tracking you down because of the smell. I use the same thumb pressure scaling a fish that I use when thumb peeling an orange. Hope that gives you a sense of technique.

This video is from one of my fav people on YouTube. His technique is exquisite.

Cool - I'll have to give that a go. Thanks!

Another GREAT use for Becker knives, I laughed when I saw the picture of the fish clock! Great job!

Hey - it's *always* time to go fishing. :D
