I finally got some micarta scales for the bk9! I tried dying them black but only parts turned out that way. It looks kind of cool, like wood grain. The micarta wasnt very "soft", almost feels like g10, maybe thats why it didnt take very well? I also didnt have the liquid RIT dye so i used the powdered stuff, the liquid might have worked better.

Ugggh, i cant remember how to share the pictures. I think its time for a paid membership...

All you gotta do is make an imgur account my man too post pics. I've also dyed some micarta scales black, and considered it it be as hard as your describing, didn't have any problems with dying. Would like to see these. How long did you dye them for?

Thank you!

Pretty dang cool man.

Indeed, they look great, would not be disappointed how those turned out at all. Almost look like red and back g10.

They look good
Thanks guys, they are growing on me more and more, im starting to really dig them. They do have a 2 tone g10 look. Oh and Ulf, i dont know how much time combined because i forgot the water needed to be hot the first round but probably an hour or two. I was suprised at how dark they were to begin with, almost a chocolate color if i remember correctly. I should have taken before and after shots but i was too excited!

Those turned out awesome!!
Very cool.

I've tried the black rit dye a couple times and never got an actual black. Just a dark brown each time. Makes me think that it's probably just the canvas that gets dyed and that the hard resin doesn't really take.

The Warrior The Warrior you might like to know that side by side with the g10 i'd say the micarta is grippier. Definitely rougher on the hand, not deal breaker bad though. Thought youd like to know because of your comments on that other thread awhile back.

I think you are right. I have seen some that are all black and i cant figure out how they did it. My bk11 that came with dyed black micarta but it was very soft micarta (which i like) but idk if that has something to do with it or maybe there is a secret technique O_o

The all black micarta you are seeing is micarta that was made from the start black. Micarta can be made in just about any color. Micarta is made with several layers of canvas, linens, burlap even paper and any thin material. Use red canvas you get red micarta. It's a process of several layers with resins. Like Jonny1280 said the hard resin doesn't allow the dye or stain to penetrate . The only reason I think your able to darken the micarta is the fuzzy texture left from the sanding with something very rough. If you were to sand your scales with fine sandpaper you would end up with very smooth scales and I don't think you would be able to change the color unless you use paint. You can always change the texture to your likes of any scale material by sanding and using different grits. Hope this helps. :)

The middle is black and white canvas the the top and bottom all black the bottom has been sanded with med.grit emery cloth. Just want to say I do like the color of your scales a lot

Thanks dude! That would make sense, it could have even been custom micarta the guy made himself. I like them better now than what i was going for anyways, like R Roguer said, a happy accident haha.
