I really love my new Bk9 for survival/bushcraft/camping. I'm going to make a kydex sheath for it today with a spot for a second smaller knife. For the little stuff. Making traps, food prep, whittling, etc. I've narrowed my choices down to either my Esee 3, or my Mora HD? I have others but love those two. Pros, cons? Or any other suggestion? What do you guys pair with your choppers? Oh and I never leave home without my Leatherman Charge TTI. So just knife recommendations. Thanks.

I was going to say a leatherman, but you've got that covered. Any small fixed blade or a durable folder. Personally I'd go for something classy and timeless, stacked leather handle, leather sheath, stuff like that. I've got an ESEE 3 and its a great knife if you need a do everything smaller fixed blade, but everyone should try a good classic design sometime.

I've got my eye on one of these GEC fixed blades for similar use:

Eric that middle blade is gorgeous! And your right. It's simple, clean and looks very practical. The problem I have with the Mora VS Esse3 is that I love the flat grip on the Esee. It would be less bulky on my combo sheath. But honestly I used both one day making a survival bow. The Mora with that Scandi grind makes short work of any woodworking. But that fat broom stick like grip would make my sheath kinda bulky. Decisions, decisions.

I have been using a regular Mora with my BK9 for about 3 years now. I find that they work great together. The BK9 handles all the large chores, and sometimes even some of the smaller ones (it does really quite well at feathersticks and tent stakes IMO), while the Mora does just about everything else. Also, the Mora is very light, and doesn't add much weight to the kit, while it adds a lot of versatility.

In my opinion you don't need the extra robustness of the HD when you already have the BK9. So you may as well get the normal companion, but that's really a minor thing.

I know lots of people like the ESEE 3, BK14, and BK16 with their BK9, but really it will come down to your preferences.

Logan, yeah I'm about 99% on the Mora. I'll get creative with the sheath. I agree. It's just so hard to beat that Mora. My wife laughed at me the other day because I was cutting my steak with it. She said "you know we have steak knives"? I said "yeah but look how this thing cuts"!

I have a regular non-HD Mora as well. And don't they look good together? Like peas and carrots.

Yeah I handled one at a show when they were still Blind Horse Knives, and since then its been one of those knives I keep finding myself adding to my cart but not buying haha. Definitely worth checking their site out. Lots of options and styles plus they are remarkably affordable working knives. They do come in flat grind or scandi too:

But if you're choosing between the two you have, I'd go for the ESEE 3 as I love mine. I don't have much time with a Mora though, gotta pick up another one some day.

Oh, if the "fat handles" of the Mora are in the way on the sheath, you could just rotate the knife 30-45 degrees, so that the handle doesn't "lay flat" against the blade portion of the BK9. I've seen that setup a number of times before, and it seems to work well.

The irony is that the Mora is usually my choice BECAUSE of the nice comfy handle, and the good performance. My hand cramps up if I try to featherstick with anything that is too small, so I tend to try to bring knives that are full 4 finger grips for me.

And, just saying, if you already have the Mora, it seems like a "no-brainer" to at least try it out on/with the BK9. If you're unsatisfied with it, then maybe you could branch out and try something else :).

Good luck making the decision :p.

I'll definitely check them out. It's rare nowadays for me to see a knife that just speaks to me. But I really like that knife. I like my Esse3 as well. Got it for $60! My daughters friends ex boyfriend broke up with her and left it in her truck. She said "you want it"? She was going to give it to me. She didn't know what it was? I said girl let me give you some money. I offered more but she wouldn't take it. And once you handle a Mora you'll throw that Esse away. And when you do I'll send my address so you can send it to me for proper disposal. Those things are dangerous.

Yeah Logan it's a done deal. I'm cutting out the kydex now. And agreed on the handle. Love the grip. And I just payed them side by side and it's not that much thinker than the Esse. Seemed much fatter? But side by side? Minor. Thanks everyone!

Look what I just found!? Nothing new under the sun right? I knew somebody had to have already paired them up. Time to get to work.

My BK9 usually gets paired with the BK14. They go great together.

^^^ THIS.

Keep it in the family!

I'd say a BK11 or 14 works great but there's no "right" or "wrong" answer. As long as you're satisfied with the pairing, that's all that matters.

+1 on the Mora, much functionality for very little extra weight.

If you want to stay in the Becker line, I'd go with a 16. If you want to go with any other brands stick close to the specs of the......16. [emoji6]

I vote Mora.

When I take my BK9 out it's always accompanied by a Mora 1, Companion, or Bushcraft Black.

I pair up mine with Mora Bushcraft, occasionally with both the Mora and a BK24 (BK24 attaches to the BK9 sheath in piggyback configuration, Mora rides on the other side). I think a BK15 would be good too, but I don't have one (just yet).
