BK9 scout sheath- Any thoughts?

Hello All,

I recently received my BK9! This is quite an impressive blade although I have yet to use it. What I would like to know is, how well does "The King" work in a scout style sheath? I have seen several pics where other large blades tend to hang lower from the handle side. I was interested in buying a scout style, but I am worried it might hang a little low and possibly get caught while moving through thick brush. Should I stick with this style, or should I just pick something else?

Thanks,

I've never been much of a fan of scout style carry. It makes sense if you spend a fair amount of time belly down in the dirt, but not much else.

Hard to resheath, and you have a hard time getting to any attachments you may have on you sheath.

I say stick to strong side or cross draw. Leave the scout carry to the scouts........

I'm thinking that unless your backside is even more "muscular" than mine, there'd be just too much knife sticking out on either side of center. I've been lookin at some Baldric style carriers, tho, if you're just looking for a different way to carry the King.
+1 fer what Moose says, otherwise.

"Scout Sheath"

I think the name says it all. If you're runnin and gunnin, it makes some sense. Or if you are spending a ton of time walking in an outdoor environment, maybe.

If you are down to your last ditch essentials, knife, fire steel, and altoids can yeah. Or perhaps just woods bumming with minimum gear. Most Scouts I see are pouched and steeled, so everything has to be removed and reinstaled from behind your back. I also think the size of the BK-9 might make for a wide scout.

In peaceful situations, I think a Baldric or Dundee style sheath works well. I like Baldrics, especially for heavy items. But they can leave you disconected from your knife if that matters to you. On the plus side it can be carried weak side if you use a hand gun, strong side if you don't

In theory, I love the Scout style sheath idea. In application, I have tried it and I personally have had mixed results. More and more I lean toward weak side cross-draw. Sort of like the cowboys, pistol on the right, knife on the left.

Carry methods, like knives themselves, vary with personal tastes, and differing applications.

Upsides,
Frontal Concealment,
Nothing in the way of your hands on the sides.
Easy access to hand gun if carried.
Tight fitting, no flopping around.

Downsides,
Uncomfortable in vehicles, or any seat with a back.
No laying down for a quick rest without your knife sticking you in your back
Higher potential for loss, depending on sheath choice.
Resheathing can be slower,
Usually more difficult to get on and off.
Interferes with pack belts, pistol belts, and other LBE unless attached to them.

YMMV, good Luck in your choice,
LV

I don't know....I kinda like the idea of a back sheath...over the head draw....muah ha ha ha ha!

That's a little different ;)

I agree with the other folks; big knives in scout sheaths are a bit too awkward for me. I like 'em better for smaller knives (4" blade, maybe 5"), where the knife rides just over my strong-side back pocket. I feel the same way about carrying a knife on my weak-side backpack strap... it works pretty good for small/medium knives but not so great for big ones.

I've toyed with the idea of making a scout-style and carrying it across the front of my waist... but I'm afraid my 12-pack abs will get in the way :D

Yah, I think with a knife like the BK9 some sort of cross draw is the way to go. I have my sheath modded a bit, but this is the most comfortable/accessible set up for me.

Thank you for all of the great comments! My main application for the blade will be EDC at work. I am almost always in the woods, so I thought I might try it out. I usually carry a woodman's pal, but the sheath is less than stellar and it is a little heavy for some tasks. I like the idea of carrying a big blade when I'm in the woods, but I want to carry something different than a machete. Having a sheath on your leg while in thick brush can sometimes be problematic. That is why I was considering a scout style sheath. The baldric style sheath sounds useful! Pics anyone?

Not a Becker hanging off off it, but you get the idea,

I have one for my Reeves Double Bit also,
