BK9 Stock Sheath Pack Carry?

I know a lot of you guys don't like the stock sheaths on our Beckers, but they seem fine to me. I'm a pretty low-maintenance guy so I like to work with what I got. If I had some extra funds to buy a new sheath instead of a new knife, I definitely would, but that is not the point of this thread.

I did some searching and I found a few posts of some of you guys attaching the BK9 stock sheath to your packs but I'm still a bit confused. I just got my new pack and I want to rig the sheath to it. What do you guys think is the best way to go about that? Is the sheath molle compatible at all (the pack is)? Is there some way to make it so? Paracord rigging? Back/side/shoulder strap mount? Let me know what you guys think, and pictures would be most appreciated :). Thanks guys!

Oh and if there is already a thread on this, please direct me to it and disregard.

I think most people use the molle strap & attatch to a pack that has the molle webbing on it. If yours don't have it, then you will just have to customize it. I went with aftermarket sheath & it is not pack mounted, sorry.

Between the eyelets on the bottom of the sheath and the belt loop/eyelets at the top of the sheath you should be able to use some creative paracord skillz to rig it up no problem. If you feel like getting some extra credit you could even put in some of your own eyelets along the sides of the sheath as well and really rig it up proper. Someone will probably some along soon with some pics of their pack mounted 9 but I usually just slide mine INTO my pack if it doesn't go on my waist. Also, I agree about stock sheath, got no problems with it.

Glad you posted this. I'm thinking of attaching my stock BK7 sheath to my pack. Pics of how others did it sure would save some time.

Haha yeah. I tried to think of ways to do it myself yesterday but I couldn't figure anything worthwhile. But I know a lot of these guys are way more creative than I am. Hopefully not all hope is lost for our stock sheaths and they chime in!

I think if you use some paracord and some ingenuity I'm sure you could figure out a way to use the grommets at the top and bottom of the sheath to attach to you pack.

I forgot who posted it, but someone rigged theirs in a Ranger carry (upside down chest carry) on their backpack with paracord through the eyelets at the top and the belt through the belt loop.

Or, if your pack has MOLLE webbing, that will work with the new sheaths.

Yeah the new sheaths look like they would be great for mounting on packs. Too bad I don't have one of those...

And zip ties eh? Never thought about using them, very interesting.

If I was going pack carry on an old type stock sheath I would run ALICE clips through the loops at the top of the sheath behind the belt loop and I would tie the bottom of the sheath off to my pack with zipties or paracord.

Yeah I'm going to hit up the local army surplus store today and pick up some clips and paracord and see what I can do. No one has posted any pictures yet so I guess I'm on my own haha let's see what I can do!

You've gotta get pretty creative depending on the pack. I've got the bottom of the sheath tucked into a waterbottle pouch on the side and cinched tight, the belt loop has a compression strap through it, and I used the top eyelets and some paracord to lash it to the crooked molle strips on the side of my eberlestock lodrag. I'll edit in a picture when I get home.

I don't keep my 9 on my pack anymore, but since I'm busy swapping out my BK2 for my Machax with a new sheath for a camping trip next week, my pack was easy to use to snap a few pics of for you to show how the 9 used to be attached with the stock (Camillus) sheath.

Here's the knife/sheath:

Here's the back with the two quasi-MOLLE channels:

I used a 1/2" (I think) strap with one of those buckles that I don't know what you call 'em and thread it through one channel:

Then I fished it through two levels of MOLLE points on the pack:

I brought it back up through the pack-points and the other channel on the sheath and threaded it through the buckle and tightened it up firm, but not so tight that it starts deforming the top of the flimsy part of the sheath at the attachment points:

My pack has several quick-release straps for tying down whatever, so I used the top and bottom ones just as stabilizing points. The strap that's fished through the MOLLE points is what's holding it secure though:

At one point I did use zip-ties, but they were harder to reuse or dismount the knife once you get set up at a camp. This is totally gerry-rigged, but that strap is very lightweight and I've been all over Bankhead National Forest carrying that knife that way without it ever even starting to come apart.

I swapped the BK9 for my Kershaw Outcast after keeping it there for about a year I guess. I like the 9 better than the Outcast, but the Outcast's stock sheath was so much easier to mount on the pack, and I could mount it upside down so I could get to the knife without having to take the pack off. It looked like this:

Now I'm getting ready to mount my Machax the same way in a Kydex sheath that I just got in yesterday.

There ya go.

Wow thanks for the tips/pics! Hmm very interesting. What exactly is that strap you're using?

I use a small loop of paracord and a keychain carabiner to clip the bottom of the sheath to the top of the shoulder strap on my backpack, and run the backpack's belt through the belt loop of the sheath.

Hi dust. A lot of kydex and nylon sheaths are molle compatible these days. Unfortunately I dont see as many leather sheaths that are. But using Kydex sheaths you can use molle locks from ESEE to attach them to a molle backpack. Also using nylon sheaths, you can interweave the molle strap on the back of the sheath with between the molle bands to attach it onto a backpack. Very secure and looks cool! This link shows you how to thread the molle strap with the molle bands on the backpack. http://www.eseeknives.com/molle strap.jpg

You're welcome.

I don't remember where those straps came from. I have three or four of 'em floatin' around in my gear. I think they might have come from an old external frame-style backpack I had for many years. Or I might have just picked them up in a 4-pak at a sporting goods store or a K-Mart or something. They're just generic tie-down straps in any case, and very old. I've probably had them for more than 30 years. The modern equivalent would be with the plastic quick-connect closures like shown on my pack. They are a lot easier to use on the fly, but they're also much more bulky, and would be hard (if not impossible) to thread through the attachment channels. If you're handy with knots, paracord would work just as well.

He was asking specifically about old-style Becker stock sheaths that don't have the MOLLE strap like the one pictured in your link.
