I am interested in buying a large chopping knife
I don't want to spend more then $100 on it
How do the heavy bowie and BK9 compare,
what other choices do I have,
and feel free to share some of your experiences with either of them

Thanks in advance,

Only have the Heavy Bowie as of now(BK9 on the way:D), but it has served me well.
I reground the edge because I thought it was`nt sharp enuogh from the factory (I usually do this to all my knives though).
The heavy Bowie is a god chopper, and with the right grind also a good allrounder.
Looking forward to getting my 9, as I have heard so many good things about it..

My son has the heavy bowie and it's nice. I like my BK9 quite a bit more though. The BK9 feels more sturdy (my opinion) and it's certainly easier to modify if that appeals to you. My son has used his heavy bowie a fair bit, but honestly his BK7 is his goto knife.

My BK9 sees lots of action in the fall and winter - I'd get another in a heartbeat.

Gotta be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the Heavy Bowie as a chopper. It's neutral balance, which makes it excellent as a fighting knife, is a chopping drawback. It also feels really light, surprising considering how big it is. Good handle though.

I strongly urge you to consider the Cutlass machete. That is my go-to chopper and I love mine to death. Crystal clear sweet spot, very forward balanced, wide where it needs to be, same great Heavy Tools handle and steel.

To me there is simply no contest between these two knives. I'd actually choose a Warthog even over the HB for chopping. I'd also rather use my BK7.

Don't have a BK9 yet so can't comment from personal experience, but a lot of people love em. Beckers are so damn dependable.

I was actually in the same situation as you are. I considered the Heavy Bowie, the BK9, and the ZK knives.

I ended up with a ZK War sword, and then won a BK9 shortly thereafter. And of course I did a comparison review of them.

So that might not help you with the Heavy Bowie, but the BK9 is great at what it does. Don't get me wrong, the ZK War Sword was also good at the same things, and had I never owned a BK9, I might not have felt the need.

It is better though.

BK9 on the way. I'll be able to conclusively answer this question in a week or so :)

What they said. Don't have a BK9 but it is definitely a better chopper. I prefer my Kukri or Warthog for heavy chopping compared to my Heavy Bowie.

I have both knives. The BK9 has a better balance for chopping. The heavy bowie actually is light. And the grip is not really my type -- its definitely not as ergonomic as t he BK9. I say go for the bk9 if you want the better knife. If funds are an issue, the heavy bowie will do fine.
