hey guys,

So i have a spyderco sharpmaker that i use for essentially all my fixed blades and my edc. The thing is, i recently purchased my first becker ( a bk9) and i'm having a lot of issues getting it sharpened up with my sharpmaker. Mainly, i'll admit, its more knife than I'm used to. I've never owned a knife this substantial. Has anyone else had any success with a sharpmaker on a knife this size? should i just stick with the whetstone and strop? suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I sharpened my BK9 with the sharpmaker before I convexed it. It works you just have to be more meticulous. Its longer than is ideal for the sharpmaker. That being said mouse pad and sandpaper will open a whole new world of sharp with the BK9

What grit levels do you use on the mousepad?

thanks for the tip. I'll definitely give it a shot. Helps alot bud.

To reprofile a V edge to convex I start with 180 then got to 220 400 600 1000 1500 2000 then strop. After that a strop is enough to keep it razor sharp.

The higher grits you get at an auto parts store they usually have up to 2000 grit at least.

It dosnt take that long really. Get a combo pack at an auto parts store. Hit it 15-20 times per sheet.

great, thanks a bunch bud. I've been meaning to do it since i picked up the 9. I'll be at my local hardware store tomorrow.

Disastrous results to be posted tomorrow ;)

The factory angle is probably a bit off compared to the Sharpmakers 40 degree.
I have diamond rods for mine. I had to use them to basically reprofile the edge.
A few of my stock Beckers have been a bit more obtuse than 40 degrees.
If you're using the medium stones it'll probably take a little longer.
Don't forget to mark the edge with a sharpie. Then look at it after a few strokes.
You'll see what's coming off and what's staying. I usually use a magnifying glass too(which is actually the lid to my daughters bughouse.)
Patience, patience, patience.
The Sharpmaker will get that bad boy screamin' sharp!

If you don't want to convex it norton india bench stones are awesome too!

do it in sections - 3 passes on the first half and 3 passes on the second half with a slight overlap...bench stones and convex are good too but i suggest practicing on a smaller knife first. there's a lot of edge on that bk-9 that you can get even more dull than it already is if you screw up (the sharpmaker being the least risky).

Tradewater had a suggestion for something to use that would work a lot better than a mousepad. He uses one of those drywall hand sanders, which has a rubber pad for give, a means to lock in the sandpaper, and a really comfortable handle to use.

One of these:
