BK9- what do you use the POINT for?

I've read a lot about people using their BK9's- they seem to be mostly chopping and batonning, with some light carving of fuzz sticks and such. So do you actually use the point and if so, what do you do with it?

I ask because the point seems to be fairly blunt. I've been watching videos from the knife tests guys and found some interesting point tests with alternative styles such as a tanto and the really pointed Cold Steel SRK.

To stick it into logs for pictures, of course.

Or sticking hogs, I'd like to do that someday.

It's also handy for push/pulling wood around in the fire when you're too damn lazy to get up and get a proper tool for the job. :)

Used it to pop a grape-sized tick on a Brangus steer this morning, too. Neither of those creatures was happy with that application.

Does a good job of picking cow/dog crap out of boot treads, as well.

It's good for self defense if needed! It makes me feel a little safer when I'm out in the bush alone, but I carry a gun when I have my family with me. I am ready to protect them at all cost!

Drilling, spearing, fine tip work. Clip point are thinned out fir that reason. Make a thicker knife do fine tip work as well as a thin knife.

You could always grind it off if you don't use it....

Um, yeah, we've seen that. :barf: :D

I use mine for drilling divots for bowdrills, and for when I'm notching logs, so the will stand as a good fire fence or fire backstop, mostly. I use it to flip over rocks when I'm looking for stick bait, or probing inside of a dead log for bait.

I also use it when I gut fish, or open up a critter.

Well, I'd never do it to a BK9, that's just crazy talk. Although the Haze BK9 has a pretty pronounced point!

I mainly use the point to add weight over the chopping portion of the blade :D.

Also, the point on the BK9 is actually "better" than the point on say... the BK2. It works much better for drilling and poking things. It is a longer knife, but just because its larger doesn't mean that the point is not useful.

Just my two cents though.

It seems like they just have different strengths to me. I find the BK2 to be invaluable to prying work. I would never subject my BK9 to the same abuses on that front. That said, I haven't had a chance t use my BK9 in the woods but I believe what you say about drilling and poking. The shape of the blade looks like it would lend itself well to those tasks.

Good point. I should clarify by saying that the BK9 has a "better" tip MEANING that it is simply more pointy and "tip" like. For the strength the BK2 for sure has it beat in that department.

:D

The tip on my 9 is sharp as hell but mine is full convex and Fisked. I found even the thick camillus era stock to be very easy to get a startlingly sharp edge on it. I managed to stab and cut myself with the tip about a week ago and it was sharp enough that I didn't feel the the cut at all and it cut so clean its almost completely healed even though both cuts were bone deep. Never underestimate the sliceyness of a 9 or its tip. It will skin, drill slice or dig pretty much anything you need.

it's for stabbing deep into the heart of your enemies, so their ancestors know the taste of Becker in their souls
