All,

I have been a member here for quite awhile, and just now getting back into the swing of things. I have had my eye on the bk9 for a long while now, and already have a 2 and a 7. I was wondering with all the modifications that others have done on here, if it would be possible to add a sawblade on the top of it, kind of like the sogfari or the gerber gator machete with the saw blade on back. The main reason i have not purchased it yet is because i was thinking about picking one of the previous mentioned knives for that. I truly feel that this addition would make it the perfect machete/wood processing knife, as long as it didnt make the knife weaker. Does anybody have any thoughts on this?

It seems to me that someone did do a saw mod on either a 9, or 7. Can't remember.

I will say, the saw blade on the back of the Gator machete is very effective. Before I got my Laplander, the Gator was my go-to for sawing. It would be cool if you could replicate it on the 9, you know, for notching and clean-cutting small branches. As long as you could do it in a way that didn't mess up a baton... Maybe only 4-5 inches on the spine...
Would love to see that mod.

I remember seeing that mod done, but couldn't find it. Would be a lot of filing. If you could find one of the old timers with a Belsaw machine they could probably cut teeth in it for you. Every town used to have a saw sharpener back in the day.

It would weaken it by creating focus points for batonning stress.
A folding saw would be a better choice, I think. The Laplander gets high marks in reviews compared to the domestic (US) cheapos.

I agree with daizee. If you think of it like this. If you were paying yourself to do this mod to a niner. Paying yourself minimum wage you could buy yourself a Bahco Laplander long before you finish the job on the spine of the nine.

Even if the sawback didn't weaken the blade (which is would) it probably would be too thick to be a very good saw. A Laplander is inexpensive, very light, and most importantly a very effective saw.

To get my fix of sawback , I bought a ka bar kraton handle big brother and a sog knives jungle primitive. Both are fairly inexpensive , and fun to play with. I've thrown the jungle primitive , chopped dead wood with it , used the saw , it actually worked quite well. Not the best steel or the best knife to have, but it scratched an itch. And If it does break boohoo , at its Price point. My point is buy a cheap knife to scratch your saw back itch.

Frankly, it's an awful idea. Buy saws for sawing and big chopping knives for chopping. :)

The bacho laplander is excellent. Even the cheapo Coughlan's ones ($6 or so from Wally World) Work pretty well.

I have been curious on this subject myself. Would a saw with the spie tip sharpened as a knife be a better build? If I already have a decent saw blade I have limited need for a chopper , but now I need something to slice with. How about a 12" saw blade with 3" at the tip without any teeth but a solid blade edge?

The best thing would be to carry a laplander and a mora. ~$40 shipped for the whole package, very light, and performs well at tasks they were designed for.

This is far too logical and cost effective. Plus, you failed to mention that the rotation of the solar system may slow incrementally with not having a 9, sawback mod or no.

I thought having a BK9 was a given at this point. Several people bought them just because they were sick of me talking about it. Then they realized what they had been missing and showered me with gifts and praise. Somewhere in Central America I'm know as The Prophet of the 9 and there is a shrine in my honor. It's not nearly as big as Tradewater's but still.

I've had the BK9 only a short while, but I've had this saw for perhaps 30 years and used it many times over those years. In my case I like to have a tool for every purpose -- never was attracted that much to multipurpose tools :) Here are some photos of my BK9 and the Buck saw:

As to the availability of this saw, I don't know. I don't think Buck makes them any longer but it is light-weight and very durable -- may last forever. Perhaps they'll bring it back some day.

I'd be more than happy to have some shine in your honor. I'll do that directly.
