Black Bear attack repelled by rock

 It's a good thing he didn't miss - I hope to never caught in that situation.

Looks like a small rock to make such a big impact. I guess he didn't have a chainsaw or axe with him.

may be a dumb question, but can anyone tell me if the black bears are bigger and/or meaner in bc than in california or the US? ive had three encounters with them, two of which i chased them away from my food, the other encountered on a trail which was just a pause, stare and then took off runnin, the others didnt stare just ran. i know the mommas are mean in spring and the papa bears are meaner during mateing,am i just lucky they ran,or is that more common for most here?

the article does say that man had some experience as a baseball pitcher.
The rock may be small, but I believe it was a magnum rock. :D

I can try to track down the source for you, but I remember reading an article that cited that black bears on the east coast are much mellower than their counterparts in the western and northwestern territories including Canada.

My understanding is that there is a difference in aggressiveness, even within B.C, where the Northern Blackbears tend to be more predatory than the Southern Black Bears.

Castlegar is in Southern B.C., where the main issue seems to be the growing habituation of Bears to people, combined with poor berry crops this summer.

I would have missed--and the bear would have ate me SLOWER just cause I tried to hit it with a rock.

I live in Washington state up in the mountains on 5 acres and have had three black bear encounters this year. Nothing serious, one I was hiking and came across a small cub and it just sat and stared at me but I got out of there because it was early summer and I figured the mom was still around somewhere. The other two were on my property in my garden while my plum tree was ready to harvest. The came back to that tree daily as there was always scat all around the trunk. I saw a small cub inside the garden and when it saw me it jumped/climbed the 7 foot fence in about a second. The other was huge and it was walking down my driveway away from the garden as I pulled up from work, it also ran off when it saw me. They don't appear to be very hostile here but I have heard that they are much more aggresive the further north you get.

I am originally from BC. Also lived in SE Alaska, and now in So. Calif. I am seeing more bears in my local mountains (San Bernardino) and the Sierra than ever before!!! Girlfriend was boating on Lake Arrowhead the other day. There are portapoties on the shore here and there where you can pull in and go to the bathroom. She pulled up to one, and there was a bear there....and he was holding onto the outhouse and shaking it (nobody in it...thankfully).

At least one place where it is legal to be armed here in Calif....is your campsite!
