Hey boys and girls,

just some pics of my buddy the buck nighthawk, the knife that introduced me to the buck family.

Somewhere in the 90's, when I started my outdoor adventures, I bought this knife to provide me company in the woods. It saw a decent amount of use there, strapped to my backpack's shoulder strap (with some tiewraps).

I took it out of the shed last year, to give it a good makeover. Put in on the japanese waterstones but I really did not give it any use. Because of a lack of time, I also did not get out the chips it had here and there.

Then a belgian buddy of mine came up with his nighthawk a weekend out in december, the one with the green/od handle. So we got to talking about it and I found out the black ones aren't sold anymore (apparently).

Now, we're going on a trip to sweden this year and he's bringing the nighthawk and I'm still thinking about it, I prefer to make the trip more thematic by bringing my fallkniven knives :)

But anyway, I love the knife, it was the first knife I bought myself and for me it was instantaneous admiration of it's beauty.
This week, I completely restored the edge on my new dmt diafolds (c/f/xf/xxf) and then I stropped it.
:Dyessss, the result is no more hair on my arms hehehe:thumbup::thumbup: It's sharp as my mother in law's remarks when I'm late for dinner ;)

Now for some questions:
- what is the steel on the nighthawk?
- when did they start producing it?
- I'm not sure what year I bought it, maybe it follows from the previous question. I guess around 1995
- why was the black color discontinued?
- any other information on this knife?

thanks guys.

now, enjoy the pics

Zyhano, I cannot read the stamp on your knife in order to answer your questions . Please, just state as it appears on the blade . The black coated model came out in 1994 and the other a year previous . As it was not mentioned in the 92 catalog . So, all the Nighthawks will have 420HC steel . A good stainless and easy to sharpen . DM

Nice picture, Wolfjohn. A non-serrated, non-coated short NightHawk, Very nice.

Yuppers! It's one of my favorites....I don't see them come up much anymore as the others...there's one on ebay right now~~

I had a black one just like that. When my unit deployed to Iraq in '04 I gave away a bunch of my extra knives to guys in my squad who could'nt afford a decent knife and that one went to one of my young SGTs. He was wounded early in the dedployment and was out of the Army by the time we returned in '05. As far as I know he still has it. I was'nt as into Bucks then like I am now and one of these days I'll have to get another one.

Give me your address vet and I'll send you one...seriously!:thumbup:

Buck went from the all black handle to an od and black handle. Right after the mark for the knife type there should be a mark and that tells the year made. Someone will be in with the type of steel. Here is were you can see a picture of my NightHawks. http://edbeau.multiply.com/photos/album/3/Buck_Knives#photo=4
thanks, good info

1996 is the year of your 650.
thanks, how do you know that from the 650 C thing? what's the logic in it?

nice pics wolfjohn

No logic there is a chart that shows what symbol was used for what year. Someone will let you know where the chart is on the forum. It is a picture so you can download it.

Our stories are almost identical zyhano. Some time ago I was investigating joining the Australian Army and looking around at 'tactical' knives. I stumbled across a Nighthawk on ebay and fell in love with it instantly. It was being sold by the daughter of the late owner and I was the only bidder. It's a '94 and in immaculate condition. My first knife, my first Buck (I now own seven), and still my favourite. Beautifully balanced, feels great in the hand and scary sharp.

That was not me who digged out this old rotted thread.
But at least I'm not going with you regarding the dates you wrote.

Yes, the black Nighthawk was introduced in 1994. But the bead blasted came
a year later than the black one. In 1994 and 1995 the Nighthawk had the 425
steel, if it is true what is written in the catalog.

Best,
Haebbie
