Are they really made stronger? Or is this just a sales pitch. I really like the 520 and 525.
 
They have the same quality as the Blue Class knives. Just the Black Class is supposed to have designs that are geared more towards the Law Enforcement and Military crowd. To sum it up it's a more "tactical" Blue Class.
 
A marketing "tool", yes, as are the names "Mustang" and "Expedition" (et al) for Ford. But it is more than that. It's a way to delineate (as others already said) that group of their product from the other three groups.

Gold Class: very few models are chosen for Gold Class. Modified to make each unique from its Blue or Black Class brother. Uses premium scale material, slight modifications to design, "jewelry", etc.

Blue and Black Class: high-quality Benchmade knives made in the US

Red Class: foreign-made Benchmade knives (most, but not all, in Taiwan)
