how does the black coat on the emerson's hold up, kershaw has the best coating ive seen so far just wanted to know because im getting a CQC 8 soon in the BC.

Gine---I used Green Scrubbies. The finish now, looks almost like the original Satin but a tad duller. I could make it brighter but i like it like this. I'll try to Post a pic as soon as I'm set up to do that.

if i wanted to remove coating i would be tempted to take it to a local machine shop and have it bead blasted, then i would either leave the finish like that or polish it out to satin.

have also heard good about the way lycosa suggests but havent actually seen one.

personally, i dont care for the coating, i wish EKI would offer a real satin finish vs whats available now. imho nothing looks crummier than a scuffed/scratched coated blade & if ya use it at all its gonna end up scuffed/scratched, give me satin any day of the week.

& its not just EKI, like i said any coating is gonna scuff up with use, from anyone, i dont think a coating has been invented yet that wont scuff, if it has i havent seen it.

when i 1st started collecting high end knives i preffered the coated ones, but i learned fast lol.

cool I may try this on my blackhawk.

thx.

Gine---Let me know how you make-out! You'll need a little elbow grease.

I have found the coating on my Emersons to be tougher than most. One time when I was playing around with the different angles on my Lansky, I noticed (too late) that the rods were rubbing against the side of the blade on my CQC-7. Rub marks can be seen only if it is held in a certain angle, but no bare steel is showing.

ahh very good cause for some reason i dont want the cqc 8 in the gray finish because i have my mini commander in the gray finish i guess thats why i want the black cqc8

to strip the black finish quickly with no scrubbing or dulling of the metal underneath, remove the blade, hang in the garage or outside via a coat hanger wire and spray with autobody paint stripper. Let it sit for half an hour to forty five minutes and then brush off the bubbled up coating with an old toothbrush. Respray if needed and repeat, then wash well with dishsoap and hot water. Dry and spray with silicone lube and wipe clean.

Without the coating, is it now susceptible to rust? Or are they like Glocks wherein the anti-rust treatment is held onto the metal, beneath the black coating?

i imagine they will rust a little easier, 154 isnt bad about that though, unless i lived on the coast i wouldnt worry about it, if i did i would use a little tuffglide on it & then not worry about it.

FWIW i have never had rust probs with any of my EKI's, coated or not, but a couple summers ago i was fishing off shore of the TX coast & my coated SOCFK got a few specks of rust on it after a day out, nothing major just a couple specks, that environment is hard on just about any metals, but like i said other than that have never had probs.

Emerson's Warranty card states; the blades Will surface rust. Wipe 'em down and/or keep 'em lightly oiled. ;)

I removed the satin/ceramic finish from my commander 2 years ago, I never oil the blade just lube the pivot, still no rust.

Lagriffe---My Barrels should be in today. When I get them on my HD-7, I'll get some pix up! :) Thanks.
